I'm with you, Chip, though I did have a proper awning made for my tear - http://tinyurl.com/sxs8s

I must admit on my last trip to the Adirondacks it was so rainy for a couple of days that I went out and bought a cheap tarp just to get out of the rain. I still carry it if I need to cover more area than my awning does. But that only goes up when absolutely necessary and most nights I don't even mess with the awning - as you said, "Just raise the galley hatch and you're set up."

Anyone ever tried anything like this? Does it keep-out the rain? It is 13x13, so I thought we could put the tear right in the middle and have several inches on all four sides (even enough room for lawn chairs). It's a little pricey, but if it works, it'd be worth it. The tied-back portion can be pulled-out for screen effect, too.

I have the Large Kelty Carport, it is actually too large for us. The top bar is longer than the entire roof of the SUV. I'm still gonna keep it though, we could always attach it to one side of the EZ-Up.
