How do you replace a Harbor Freight trailer grease seal?

Postby boardhead » Wed Oct 04, 2006 7:22 pm

I put too much grease in one of the wheels of my 90154 Harbor Freight trailer and it's coming out and splattering all over the wheel/tire on the inside. I am wondering if anyone can point me to instructions on how to replace the grease seal. Do I have to remove both sets of bearings in the wheel, or can the grease seal be removed and replaced from the side of the wheel?

Thanks!

REmove the dust cap remove cotter pin remove nut remove washer and outer bearing replace the nut if it will fit threw the outer bearing race and in one swift motion pull the tire, wheel and hub off this will leave the inner bearing and seal on the spindle If the nut will not fit threw the outer race pull the hub and wheel off lay down a rag and and place hub over the rag take hammer and a long punch (preferably brass) and knock the bearing and seal out MaY not be the only way but the only way I know hope this helps

Hello, boardhead :)

I am not an expert when it comes to getting my hands in grease however,
I find that my experience is in finding data on this subject. Have talked to
a few who have taken various steps to become more acquainted in the
hands on effort that you seek information on while I try to find numbers for
maintenance issues related to bearings and grease.

It has become painfully apparent in my quest to that end that HF trailers
are made in sweat shops across the globe. Numbers ... well for some of
their rigs they choose not to list the stinking numbers. ugh~ Trust me with
email and phone in hand, along with Jack's AKA "The MadOne" admonition
about HF trailer bearing and seals ... I am getting the point brought home.

Now for and attempt to the short partial answer:

You got the only HF trailer that is touted here that HF gives you the part
numbers plain and clear on their web site. Good for you.

You will need TWO BEARINGS and TWO SEALS per wheel. If you did just
one you may have your result of the dreaded splatter d' grease.

"Cliky"Here .... is a thread that some more
hands on experts talk of your trailer while having got grease on their hands
before. You will also note a link here that will show and tell the secrets of
grease in hand while holding cold bearings in a "Servicing Wheel Bearings"
Tutorial.

Good luck~

just because you put in too much grease dosn't mean the seal is bad!
is the grease coming from the front or backside of the tire, how much grease did you pump in there?
if the seal has popped out of the wheel, try to push it back inside the race, and make sure the axle nut is tightened correctly.
if you have to replace the seal, pull the cotter pin, remove nut, yank tire and outer bearing will fall free, take tire off axle and then use a drift to smack the seal out from the axle nut side out...careful not to hit the bearing.
