Postby del » Mon Feb 05, 2007 12:19 am

i am looking at the small trailer sold by harbor freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=42708
my question is how wide is it (40 or 49)? what is the distance between the tires?

thank you

Del...dimensions are typically given as Width by Length on something like this...not to discourage you, but you might want to re-think about doing a Roswell....Doug

40'' wide x 48'' long plywood decking Capacity

Doug is correct
your trailer choice is 40" wide by 49"
long for the bed area.

If you go here and look at the Available Accesories at the bottom of the
instructions and the Box kit or the Stake kit's you will see the 40" Width.

pdf manual ITEM 42708-2VGA file:
http://www.harborfreight.com/manuals/42 ... /42708.pdf

The wheels are beyond that by a few inches on each side to make for
proper operation. If you need to know the exact distance from the 40"
Width base to each tire inside wall you might call HF customer service for
those details.

Del, that is the same HF frame that I used when I built the 1/4 Nelson, 40" wide and 48" long. I simply extended the floor out over each end of the frame, and it works for me! You can see the results if you check out my album pics. You know if you build it 40" wide, you can join "The 40" Wide Club". So far, I am the only member............ :-)

Roly,
did you have to extend the tongue on that trailer?

could i purchase this trailer, assemble it as directed. get it passed by the state, then take it home and put a different axle under it, or would the springs be not far enough apart. i am thinking 5" on each side (10" total) wider??

thanks

You bet you can. Just keep your records. Now why would you want to? If you are going to buy new axles you might as well get a wider trailer. Unless you know where you can get a free one. 8)

the harbor freight trailer would simplify getting it registered. i like the wieght of the smaller trailer. after that i could put an used axle on it. used parts bought from a friend are hard to prove. i know and he knows they are not stolen, but prove this to the state.

first of all your trailer is very nice. i see you extended the tongue and added an "a" bracing. what size is the tongue (steel). next did you move the axle?

thanks del

edit : i see harbor freight offers a tongue extension, did you use this?

Del, I didn't change the location of the axle and I added no "a" bracing, the frame is the same as when I got it in the box. I don't remember if I cut off the tongue in order to have it stick out slightly, just past the front of the tear, but I did extend the tongue by inserting a matching member within the existing portion of the tongue. My extension is of such length, that when it is jack knifed to 90 degrees along side of the car, it doesn't crunch the car fender.

I wasn't aware that HF sells an extension, and if I had known that, I wouldn't have had to modify the square tube that I bought to make it removeable. The existing axle location allows it to balance on it's wheels when I tip it up to about a 45 degree angle, when I stack it against the wall. However, it does have about 50 lbs on the hitch when it is hooked up to the tow ball. Come on over to Minden and take a look see. :-)

Roly, stacking and unstacking as the work progresses, aware of how nice it is to have the extra room normally taken up by a "standard" teardrop.

Hi Del, sorry about the delay in responding to your post. The out to out dimension of my 40" wide HF trailer tires is 52 3/4". The grease hub sticks out about a half inch farther than the face of the wheel. Hope this helps.
