Trailer jacks

Postby Joshua » Tue Aug 12, 2008 4:08 pm

You can tell I am working on this trailer now because I am asking so many questions.

Anyway, the rear jacks on my old pop up had to be removed as someone drove with the down and twisted them all to heck. There is no way to salvage them. However, I would love to get some more and put them on all four courners before I put the floor down. Anyone know where I can get some of these jacks? I believe that atwood makes them but haven't found a price. Do you all think e-bay is a good place to find them?

Also, anyone have an idea on how to securely mount the floor? The old floor was screwed on about every 6 inches into the frame with small screws. It held well for 30 years even with the floor rotting. But I would rather not drill so many holes in my newly refurbed trailer.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!

I'd think that a local RV or trailer shop ought to have them, my local shops do. Atwoods like that are a pretty popular jack. Remember, there are different lengths to them. Doug

Thanks Doug. When I go to the RV shop for supplies, the first thing they ask is what type of trailer I have. When I say I building one, they look at me funny like I just said a cuss word. Anyway, they are less on bargain prices and more on local markup. They are nice people though.

My goal is to find some decent quality ones similar to the Atwood jacks. I wasn't sure if E-bay is my best choice for them or if there were any online stores out there that someone would reccomend.

Thanks again!

Another option, is to go to a wrecking yard and get a couple of scissor jacks out of the trunks of matching cars. Just an idea. Doug

Not sure why anyone needs trailer jacks on a tear. Most of the weight is between the wheels and the tongue jack. I use a couple of boards to level it up and that's it.

Well to answer the question, I am not building a tear but rather a tiny travel trailer on an old pop up frame. So I am sure it will be heavier and the door opening will be behind the axle, so I definatly want the rear end reinforced. I can take my jackstands like I used to, but this is a perfect time since it is torn down to put on some built in ones.

Biz- I have 3 walmarts in town so surely one of them will have them?

In my case, it's simple physics. With my design and building VERY light weight, I found out quite by accident that I may need something. At one point during the early build stages, while installing the ceiling panels, I stood up through the open galley area to check the fit against the roof spars and the whole thing started tipping backwards!!! The odds of something like that happening again are practically nill; but I'll probably at least carry some of those pyramid type screw jack levelers. (I can get a pair at the local RV dealer for $13).

I put these jacks on my trailer, and never regretted it. The atwoods work fine but are a little more complicated to operate.

They are called stabilizer jacks on larger trailers. They will definitely cut down on movement of the trailer as people move about the trailer (roll over)

Thanks Del. Do you remember the brand name of the stabilizers or where to find them? I want to compare my options from all the great responses.

Not sure where he got them, but I think the ones Del used are from BAL:

This is what I got for my build.
