Harbor Freight Trailer axle replacement?

Postby ukewarrior » Sat Apr 25, 2015 12:32 pm

I have the 4x8 HB folding trailer with the 12" tires.

I overloaded it with mulch and the tires now 'bow inward' at the top, so I figure I have bent my axle or the stubs.
I know they are bent in because I can easily see it and I had one of those catastrophic blowouts from the wheel rubbing the sides of fender mounts. (bad design in my opinion)

Has anyone replaced one of these with an aftermarket axle?
I'd love to hear from anyone that has actually bought one.
I was looking at:
http://www.easternmarine.com/49-square-galvanized-trailer-axle-1200-lb-46032

I know that parts from HB take forever and I'd like to order a new one asap so the after market route seems best.

I don't think HF hubs will fit any other axle.I could be wrong.

NUTs ! Really ?!!?
I read an article online about a guy that had to emergency fix his hub on the highway due to a bearing failure.
He said he got a new hub at NAPA, so I thought these might be to some 'standard', but I have not measured them.

It may be possible to have a shop straighten it under a press. I have just assembled a 1200# HF trailer, the axle channel is not very heavy walled..

Any suggestions on what type of shop I should be looking for?
Also, is it still okay or will it just bend again?

ukewarrior,

A welding shop would be a good place to start. If you continue to overload the trailer, the axle will bend again.

JUst call H.F. 1-800-444-3353

the axle is part # 16

order the one for the 90154 model it is probably the same axle for all of the models but if it is different it will be slightly beefier since that is the HD model.
Growing older but not up !

I replaced mine with a axle from Northern Tool, it was 1.5 inches wider on each side. bought new hubs and bearing that were already grease
just slip them on turn into a nice job spaced fenders out to be over wheels Check my site on Tearjerkers same name.

axle--------#125503 90.00 dollars
Hubs-------#57204 30.00 dollars each

So, this went much easier and inexpensive than I thought.

I got a new axle from HF for $16.99 !
Shipping was only $6.99 to my house.
They say delivery in 7-10 days and the item is in stock.

Wow. I didn't expect that !

Now I just have to figure how to flip my trailer over to replace it.

I asked about bearings and they cost more than the axle for a pair.

That doesn't sound right. My guess is you will receive an axle for a wheel barrow or something equally incorrectly cross referenced.

Did the quote you a PN or did you provide one to them? Sounds like a slip up. Then again maybe the slip up is in your favor?

As a followup.
I got the axle from HF.

Everything is perfect ! No mistake on their part.

The new axle is installed and working great.

I am super impressed with their service in this matter.
