Radial replacement tires for Harbor Freight trailer?

Postby Krusty » Tue May 19, 2015 1:05 pm

I'm looking around now for some slightly larger radial tires to go on my harbor freight trailer. Anyone have some good sources for 4 bolt pattern wheels that'll hold a 13"-14" radial tire? I actually wouldn't mind finding some car wheels instead of trailer wheels (with the lug mounting surface further out to the side) as I upgraded the axle and put some brakes on it since I'm towing with such a small car.

Many of those links are now dead :-(

It looks like my first step will be to measure my lug spacing though. I'm mostly certain it's 4 on 4 but need to measure to find out.

With enough googling I've confirmed the lugs are 4" apart. Alas, most 4 lug car wheels are 100mm (3.93") apart so it may be exceedingly difficult to find a 13" or 14" radial tire rim with an offset.

Oh well. it's probably for the better as I don't need to spend money on new tires right now.

Well, here's something that could work, but adds extra cost:

http://adaptitusa.com/4x400to4x100wheeladapter.aspx
http://www.amazon.com/Wheel-Adapter-101 ... +4+lug+100

Combined with the fact that I found some 4x100 Mazda Miata wheels on craigslist just now for cheap, this might not be a horrible plan.

etrailer.com has 13" 4x4" wheels for $25.

You won't find much bigger than 13" in 4x4"

I forgot to add you can simply change out the hub for a 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern they are about $25.00 each and come with the bearings. Now the sky is the limit on options.

I got an axle with brakes on it so I don't think I can change the hubs. It may be worth asking about however. Anyone know if I am able to replace the hubs on a Dexter axle with brakes?

I think I did come across that in my searching. I was trying to dig my way down into finding some high offset car tires to bring the tires in a bit closer and cover the brakes though.

Changing the offset of a wheel changes the loading on the bearings. It is possible for that change to affect wheel bearing longevity. It may not happen for a long time, great number of miles, but that is a possibility. Just a heads up.
