Harbor Freight deck over wheels trailer

Postby robj » Mon Jul 06, 2015 4:26 pm

Thought I'd share how I got more width. I lowered the axle and ran the deck over the wheels, no fenders. My total width on the plane trailer is about 56". This trailer is about 3 years old and has been towed around 8-10k miles.

I'm about to replace the axle and hub with a more solid axle and cast hubs. sticking with the 4x4 wheels.

how many inches is the block between your axle and springs?

And what is your tire size?

I have the same kind of overhang... but my tires rub when hitting harsh pavement at highway speeds, so I need to do something similar.

I think I have about 2-2.5" only. Not much but I can get a measurement for you. I also removed the smallest 3th leaf to try and soften up the ride. Tires are 12x4.80, stockers. All the weight is in the box. The giant scale planes(9' wingspan) only weigh about 27 pounds, it holds 2 and a gas can. Not much weight. But I have hauled furniture before and never had a problem. I think the spacer is 3" and the spring another 1/4".

here is a build picture but notice I don't have that wood spacer in there anymore.

Jim I have about 2" between the deck and tires. the weight of my trailer 99% of the time never varies more than 75#. The tires have never hit looking at the paint.

One must also consider the region where one lives and travels.

It would not surprise me at all for someone who lives in, say, Florida where the roads are generally quite flat and there aren't nearly as many road hazards to have much fewer opportunities for hard hits as, say some one in New England, where there are some pretty old country lanes that bob and weave thru the trees, rocks and hills like the old horse and buggy trails did (the old roads), that also get an annual dose of freeze/thaw/snowplow upheaval and potholes the size of lake Michigan.

Just saying, YMMV.

Nice looking trailer. It it just for the RC are do you have to set up for one night stays at remote fields. The new TD I'm plan will have a pass through to the galley. Not just for soda to a hot cup of Tea but for the longer and longer gliders wings I want to fly. For now I still under 2 meters and still fly my old school high wings Citabria, Decathlons, and Cubs. Hoping to one day be able to head out of state for some good gliding events and use the trailer as a place to satay as well.

Where do you fly at. I'm the Current president of the Wichita Radio control club and fly out at Chapin field and Lake Afton Wichita Kansas.

The Design thread for my Dream camper has a picture of my Oldest surviving plane :) Well cant say that I have a few topflite taurus as well.

It's mostly just for planes. I have slept in it before. Toss in some foam and a sleeping bag and a fan! I'm down on the gulf coast unless I drive to another fly in. Heading to Knoxville next week.
