Trailer suspension upgrade shock struts

Postby JmsCaverly » Tue Jul 28, 2015 7:33 am

I remember when I was a kid my grandfather would always add shock struts to new trailers is there a forum thread about this here?

Any help would be great thanks

I took the worn out shocks off my teardrop and have never noticed the difference.

YMMV

If they were worn out they probably weren't doing anything anyway.

Most bounce that a trailer sees is due to using springs that are overrated for the load, overfilled tires don't help either. The short "slipper" spring setup many of the inexpensive trailer frames folks use have some built in damping with the friction of the spring against the wear surface. The friction between the leaves of the spring does this to some extent as well. Yes, it is more harsh but smoothness usually isn't a big focus for manufacturers since people won't be in it while moving. Shocks become more necessary when using longer higher quality automotive leaf springs. They are smooth enough that all the rebound force may not be dampened out by themselves.

Check this build http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=29395

Page 2 he shows the difference between small trailer slipper springs and the Jeep springs he uses. He adds "shocks" to the setup seen on page 3.
