Question: Clearance from frame to axle

Postby little green pea » Sun Apr 17, 2016 11:07 am

Currently the axle is overslung and I'd like to switch to underslung to be a better match for my TV and to bring the overall finished height down.

My question is about the amount of clearance needed for an underslung axle to the bottom of the frame. How many inches are recommended? This is a cambered axle, so I'll have new spring perches welded to the bottom, will it be necessary to remove the current spring perches to give more clearance to the underside of the frame?

Is it easier to just order a new axle than to mess with new perches? I've got a guy doing some other weld work for me and will have him move this at the same time if it's an easy thing to do.

Thanks in advance!

If staying with the current leaf springs, I'd take a measurement to see how much suspension travel you will end up with if you reverse the axle position. It doesn't look like there will be enough room.

I measured everything, I think there will be less than an inch of clearance.

I guess my option is to switch out the wheels for something smaller. Bummer these are brand new and were part of why this trailer was such a deal.

I like the way you think! I can justify spending money on a GoPro because it's 'for the build'
