Wheel size

Postby wilhansen » Tue Apr 11, 2017 8:56 am

Hey folks!

I'm nearing the end of a renovation project. 1967 Roadrunner by L&M manufacturing. We picked up the trailer from a guy, had been on his property for more than 20 years.

I've got to get new wheels for it (nope, I don't have the old ones... :( )

I've looked around and can't fine out what wheel size I need!

The tires that we're on it were LT235/75R15 - 5 lugs

Does that mean any 15" 5-lug wheel will work?

Yes you'll need 5-lug wheels, but you should confirm the lug pattern first. Probably 5 on 4.5.

How do you have the tires, but not the wheels?

P235 is a fairly wide tire. Are you sure this is what came on the trailer? Typically trailers from that era had 14" wheels with tires in the P185 - P215 range even though they weren't designated as such back then.)

Shameless plug for etrailer.com. I love 'em. And you can chat with a customer service rep to help find a good set of tires.

There's probably not one "right" size of tires. What matters is the size of the hub, bolt pattern, and what sort of loading you expect.

If it's been sitting for 20 years, and had LT235's on it, I would betcha it's either 5x5 (Chevy's halfton standard size) or 5x5.5 (Ford's halfton standard size) that the trucks had used for decades. Probably had whatever made it common to its tow vehicle.

Dad always switched out hubs on all trailers for 5x5.5's because he always had F100's and 150's through the years. His cousin (Chevy guy) always switched out hubs to 5x5.

Either way, the wheels are available very-reasonably from Southwest Wheel.

Good luck with your project!
