what Hub to use?

Postby Wellcraft290 » Thu Jan 30, 2020 2:35 pm

So thinking the regular timbren 3500
https://www.etrailer.com/p-TASR35HDS04.html

but no one seems to have a compatible HUB without use a brake assembly. Seems crazy to me because they used to have a combo https://www.etrailer.com/p-A35RS545.html

but apparently discontinued as the price skyrocketed up. was 735 yesterday.

Does anyone have any experience? I prefer not to get the 3500 for off road tires as it goes from 6" to 8" spindle to HUB from frame and I will be using 235/75R15 109T
which are basically 9.5" wide with https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DJ ... 0DER&psc=1 which has back spacing of 3.75" so I should have close to 2" clearance between the tire and frame. really don't need 4" or the extra trailer width which I am trying to avoid.

any help?

So called etrailer and they don't carry the correct HUB for some reason. and timbren all their local dealers don't carry trailer parts.

at this point thinking screw it go flexiride. only concern I have with them is how does it mount? the plate gets welded on but with a 2" frame rail will the arm have enough room to go n the other side of the frame rail. their information kind of blows.

Seems a minor reason to decide against Timbren IMO, where there's a will there's a way. . .

Why don't you want brakes?

I don't know how one would get those on perfectly.

Me? I like the Dexter torsion axles. They --and any axle with a full cross member--are easy to get perfectly plumb and provide independent suspension.

Here's the dope for the one I have used:

Axle Order Details
• #9 Dexter Torflex axle, downrated to 1600 pounds
• Start Angle: 22.5” down
• Trailer width: 59.5”
• Hub face: 74”
• Hub diameter: 6.5”
• Bolt Pattern: 5 on 4-1/2” with standard studs
• Lubrication: EZ Lube
• Electric Brakes: Yes

Obviously, you don't have to order it with brakes.

I welded my Flexiride to my 2x3x0.083" frame:

I would do the full axle as well. Pretty open here. Do you know what the hub gap is? the issue I have seems to be making sure i have room for the wheel and tires.

235/75r15 basically 30x9.5" on a 15x8 wheel with 3.75" back spacing.

I use Dexstar trailer rims without any offset so I probably can't help with whatever offset you have on your rims.

After many, many measurements and calculations, I ordered some zero-offset Dexstar wheels for my build.
They showed up with 0.75" positive offset, which resulted in tight clearance that I did not like. eTrailer didn't believe me. But, long story short, my order helped them identify that their entire stock of that model of wheel was not built to spec.

Trust.
But verify...

(While that was being worked out, I opted for a different path and decided to use wheels already on hand. But that did mean ordering different hubs, for even more than the wheels cost. )

My Dextars showed up from eTrailer with one being a 16" and one a 15". Same stock numbers. eTrailer was great about it.

Now Dexter. They shipped the wrong axle. It was 3" wider. But they too were good to work with. "Keep it." And promptly shipped the right one. I've got a utility trailer build in my future with a free $600 axle.
