Free 3D Modeling and animation software from Caligari

Postby agpage » Thu Jul 24, 2008 8:56 am

In Microsoft's continuing quest to compete with Google, they bought Caligari. And to compete with Sketchup, they released Truespace 7.6 for free. This is very powerful 3D modeling and animation software. It exports to Microsoft Virtual Earth.

I have been using an older copy of Truespace for a while, and it works pretty well. It is harder to learn than Sketchup, but it can do much more. They have also released all of the video course for free, so it should be possible to figure it out.

It can be found at
http://www.caligari.com/

They do require registration to download.

I figure this will be good for modeling all of the folding type of campers that I like!

I can only see a 30 free trial of 7.5 and $595 after that.

Andrew, maybe it is an "across the pond" thing...it showed as free when I went there and I am presently DL the file for the program, the PDF instructions and the video file...nothing about 30 days or a lotta bucks......

Under products they link to the "old" version, that costs money. Off the home page, you should see a link for 7.6 which is now free.

Here is a deeper link to the free version.

That's working now, with a 7.6 main page rather than the 7.5 that was there this morning. Spooky!

Caligari has one of the most difficult interfaces I've ever seen. I suppose if someone held my hands and showed me what to do...

Does this mean that MS wants to get into the high end modeling and rendering business? And I never could figure out why a big company like MS never got into the CAD business. That's still a goldmine!

Mike...
