Watch out for Sketchup 7.1

Postby pebo » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:37 am

I draw in 3D using Autocad LT (which is not actually 3D software) then use Sketchup to import and model my drawings and have been doing this for almost as long as SketchUp has been around. This past week when I opened Sketchup it ask if I wanted to upgrade to 7.1 not thinking anything of it, I went ahead and did it. When I went to import my current .DWG file I found that Google took the import for .dwg and .dxf out of the free version of SketchUp. When I went to the Sketchup site and looked I found that you now have to buy the Pro version for $495 to get the option of importing .dwg and .dxf. files. Luckly I had originally downloaded the 7.0 file so that I was able to unload 7.1 and reload 7.0. Just something to keep in mine if you use SketchUp just for modeling. I probably should try drawing in SketchUp but have been drawing in AutoCad since version 1 on one of the first DOS machines. It's a comfort thing I guess.

Hi guys,

I have the free version of Google Sketch up, and I have created a 3D drawing of the camper I want to build, but I can not figure out how to get the drawing over here to the forum... Can someone explain how to do this?

There are two ways of doing this
1. create a 2d drawing with the export feature under the "File" menu. choose your size to export and it will create a JPG file that you can upload to your album(or photobucket, other picture hosting service) then regular forum picture posting method wrapped in brackets applied

2. upload it to the 3D warehouse, and post link

I now use version 8, but loaded it in a different folder keeping version 7. This way if I want to import anything from AutoCad I do it in 7, then open that drawing in version 8.
