New CAD secrets section, and list of CAD programs...

Postby mikeschn » Sat Jan 28, 2006 6:44 am

It was suggested that I start a CAD forum...

After thinking about it for a while, and recalling how many times the subject of CAD comes up here, I decided that it would be a good idea.

This message will pull together some of the CAD programs I've seen, especially the more affordable ones...

Most teardrops and tiny travel trailers can be drawn in 2D. In fact, you probably only need one view, the side view, unless you are doing something exotic, like a runabout, or a compact.

So lets start by listing the 2D programs I can find...
I think I do some quickie reviews of these 2D programs on my laptop...

Turbocad LE (Free)
http://www.al-ki.com/tcad/download.php#TurboCADLE

Download CadStandardLite for free at
http://www.apperson.org/cadstd/lite.php

Download Ally Cad v3.4 for free at
http://www.allycad.com/

FreeCad has a motion capability Download at
http://www.askoh.com/freecad/index.html

Try Qcad it's free and it worked well
http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad.html

Another free 2d cad program
http://www.a9tech.com/

JustCAD is free too
http://www.justcad.com/

For Linux users, freeware
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sagcad

And this apparently is a website that lists additional free cad programs
http://www.freecad.com/

and if I miss any good ones, guys, please let me know...

Thanks...

Hi Mike

Thanks for taking this step. I am glad to see a place where we can focus our discussions about CAD issues.

By the way I have finally read through your tutorial for Iron CAD. It is very helpful in getting me started.

I plan to keep working with it to try and learn on my own, but I just may have to ask you a few more questions. Hope you don't mind...

You have been a great help and I appreciate it!

mike I am interested in downloading one of the freebies you have listed. However computer savy is not my nature. Which one would be concidered the best for a first timer such as my self? Or which is the easiest to operate?
This is something I would like to further learn.
Thanks very much. I really like the additional subject titles and catagories!!

Hey Mike,

This is a good idea. I can't wait until you get into rendering. I play with Rhino a lot but it gets overwhelming sometimes.

Do you do all this as a hobby or do you get paid for it somewhere too? Your renderings are fantastic,

Hi Mike , I have been looking for a program that I can put a photo of a Teardrop or Car into and change colors of it . I have been fooling around with Paint Shop Pro. but it's not really for that. I was just reading adn thought this might do it. so I can tell what something will look like a different color before I paint it.

I will be looking at Electric Image soon... It seems to be a good bang for the buck, and has a lot of features...

Somewhat close, Irfanview allows putting an image in, and swapping colors, like swap red and blue, etc. However, it swaps over the whole pix, so background changes as well.

Picture publisher does what you want, but it's pricey. IV is a freeware.

Good to see Mike ........ Will keep an eye on this and help out when I can.

Re: Changing colours ~ Try PaintdotNet. Can replace MSPaint and has a great eye dropper feature for colour control. Oh yeah - down my way we get to be heavier so color is colour.

Mike,

I need your help....I have downloaded QCAD, but I really do not know the first thing about CAD drafting. I worked as a draftsman in the lab casework business for 30 years, but it was all manual. Is there an easy way to learn QCAD? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
