The Lil Guy I bought has a nice little feature built into the window frame so you can lock them up tight or lock them about 1/4 inch open. It is nice because you can have airflow and still have a securely locked window. We had a problem the very first night we had our trailer but quickly learned

I address that issue in all my builds. fresh air is essential. I now use two flapper valves in the lower walls that open automatically when the roof fan is on. I installed a variable speed control for the roof fan on my last build, and when sleeping I put the fan on low which allows the lower flapper valves to crack open and draw fresh air from below, without cooling the interior temps much, also you may want to think about installing a carbon monoxide detector...

Each room in my new foamie has a 4" round plastic louvered soffit vent near the roof on one side. It cannot be shut. Camping in the tear on nights in the 30's it was not too much or too little. On warm nights the Wiley windows will be wide open.

Since I first saw this thread, I’ve looked for a specific ventilation size so I knew when I had my window open enough. I think I finally found one. Mr. Heater has ventilation specs for each of its heaters. The little buddy requires 4 square inches( about a 2x2 square). If I’ve done the math right that means cracking a 14x14 roof vent 0.15 inches will meet the 4 inch spec. Or cracking a typical 12x18 window about the same. For my part, when it’s cold I usually crack the roof vent so the outer lip is still below the inner lip . Now that I’ve got a standard I’ll feel better knowing that it doesn’t take much ( in fact mines not very air tight anyhow )

I installed 2 of these on my last build. They are passive vents but helped with ventilation

When its warmer, I pull the cover on the 5 inch marine deck plate I have on the side. Its got a 120MM PC case fan that I'll turn on. It makes a huge difference in reducing the stuffiness factor. Last trip, the outside temp in the morning was 47, and my son and our 12lb terrier and I slept inside, with the fan on high all night it was still 60 inside. Those vents look like a perfect solution.

  • I use a different sort of air vents, three as designed, and one gutted, to use as a matching look-alike for the other three, while serving as a rain-cover for my A/C exhaust ducting outlet. Actually, these vents were designed as rooftop vents for enclosed trailers, but I figured that they would be as rain-proof (or more) when mounted on the sides of my TTT. I use the #9139 vent, ordered from E-trailer; I originally chose these because they were rain-proof, had an industrial-look galvanized finish, and were different than the usual vents you see out there (plus, I saw several in use on trucks at my loading dock, at work).

once only sold galvanized, they now look painted silver
  • I use two of the vents for cabin ventilation, with screen material attached, to keep out insects. I leave them open in my garage, to prevent mustiness and mildew, and the louvered design keeps dust out. I can also leave them open, when traveling on the road, and no water or dust seems to get in, either. I also have a couple of high-flow computer case fans attached on a bracket so I can swing them in front of the vents, or away, as needed (the fans are also reversible). I use a similarly-screened one in the rear galley, for ventilation, but without an attached fan. My fourth vent has been gutted, used as a look-alike cover for my A/C exhaust duct, though I tried to vent thru it, but it restricted the airflow. However, the three used for just regular venting work great, as-is.

Used the same 3" vents as Greygoose, down at the footwell of the bunk, with imbedded 2 1/2 " computer fans to be used as necessary. Natural draw in cooler weather with a cracked roof vent, powered flow in warmer temps. Gotta keep those tootsies comfy!...........jd

Please be careful,
This is such a great post, felt like it should be BUMPED for any new people to the forum..
There are plenty of vents on the market that can be installed easy enough.. some even open and close for driving..
Stay safe, David

In addition to my vents shown previously, I bought a cheap carbon monoxide alarm from Amazon. I'll mount it low on the wall, about 6 inches off of the floor (below where my head would normally be when sleeping) to detect any CO before the level could rise. I don't think I'll ever need it, since I always have one or more fans circulating the air thru at least one open vent or window, though. But for $12, it is a worthwhile purchase for safety.

working on it, great idea, specially if you use a generator or some type heat source that produces carbon monoxide..

Though, a carbon monoxide detector won't detect carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide is the main worry in a sealed up camper..
The following link is a great publication on the affects of carbon dioxide poisoning..

I also placed screening inside the vents to keep out the bugs
