Conspicuity strips?

Postby VijayGupta » Sun Dec 08, 2013 4:29 pm

Any of you use these for your trailers? I see them all the time on big rigs, 7" white, 11" red.

The cheapest place I've found them is Menards (for those of you in the north central USA), or Walmart. Most places they come in a 150' roll for in excess of $1 / ft.

I haven't used them, but do have a good spot for them. I may check these out. Thanks

Also available in single-color, red, white, or amber. I have installed some at the top corners of my trailer (red/rear, amber/front) because for a trailer my size, top corner clearance lights are not required by law, but I thought some reflectors would be useful.

Except I didn't leave a place for reflectors! <sigh>

With some knife work, I split it into 1" wide strips. I paid $2 for a foot of red at my local trailer supply. They cut very generously and I got 15" for my two bucks! I cut it in to 10 @ 1"x3" pieces, and it went a LONG way! Nobody driving behind me will miss my little trailer!

The amber is harder to find - most places only have red and white. I found short chunks on eBay. Got 4@ 2"x9" strips for $3, including shipping.

The seller still has more: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271217070214?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

The amber hasn't arrived yet, but I will use it to do the similar application to the front of my trailer.

Walmart or Tractor Supply. One package has two strips, enough for the rear bumper/frame of the trailer.111159107312 About $8-10 per package, I think.

I picked up some at Harbor Freight. Was around $10 for a pack of 6 if I remember right. Stuck them to my removable bumper.

Figured it wouldn't hurt to have the extra visibility.

While conspicuity tape may not be required, it probably not a bad idea. Here are the requirement laws for United States and Canada.... http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standar ... rpstr.html

H.A. wrote:If red & white add-on stripes are not your appealing idea, One could have fun and potentially eliminate a paintjob with retroreflective vinyl sheeting.
One can buy large sheets of the stuff in a variety of colors.

Careful with that. Vehicle lights are strictly limited to red, white, and amber. Reflective devices are the same. If a cop is having a bad day, he/she could issues citations for having reflective colors other than white, red, and amber.

Reference S6.1.2 and S8.2.1 of the Federal Motor Vehicle Saftey Standards.... http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulati ... eg=571.108

Not to say you would get a ticket, but its possible. All it takes is one strict cop.
