Adding a window cover

Postby mrslamb » Wed Jun 17, 2015 12:35 pm

We have a window (that hinges open) on the front of our camper. Unfortunately, since it wasn't made to be mounted in the front, while driving in rain, it will let some water in. We'd rather not seal the entire window up, it's really great to have for added ventilation.

Does anybody have any ideas for building a cover to go over windows for driving? We're not sure how to go about attaching one on there, and have looked at different options, but it seems like they won't work.

Thanks for any advice!

I've been giving that same thing some thought. I'm leaning toward making a shallow box out of 1/8" lauan. I would assemble it stitch and glue method with epoxy. Then epoxy and possibly glass it all the way around. With a simple light frame of plywood or pine you could come up with an interesting curved face to match a curve on the front of your trailer. 1/8" lauan is very flexible and the box could be used as an awning over the window with some simple supports. Attach with small hinges or piano hinge and use latches to close it up when road tripping. Hope this helps and Good luck!

A while back, a member posted a box he made for the AC that was protuding at the front of his trailer. I do not recall if it was a TD or a CT.
If I come across it, I will post the link. One could also do some searches on it and just maybe it will come up.

I too will have a front mounted window.
I was also concerned about it getting broken from a road rock being thrown up against the window.
I was thinking of a simple hinged panel that could protect the window during travel and could be raised when camping for use as a front awning.

I've seen this setup on large travel trailers, but would like something that looks good; but is also functional.

I don't have a post on it, but in my photobucket account you can see the front window and cover I made. Go to the site and look around near this picture.

It shouldn't matter where you put the window. All windows manufactured are made not to leak when installed correctly. Therefore I would take another look at it and figure out what you did wrong.

The pic below. Is that your teardrop and the window with the problem? The glass should nest onto a seal. If it doesn't because the window is either tweeked or not closed completely, like you say, you'll have a leak problem.
