Oil Based Polyurethane Smell

Postby rhkabc » Fri Feb 16, 2018 2:59 pm

Hi All,
I am new to this forum and have definitely benefitted from all the good advice offered here. I recently purchased a 4x8 teardrop that had been sitting outdoors for a number of years. My kids and I are having a great time rebuilding it. My question pertains to my use of oil based polyurethane on the interior walls. I purchased 1/8 inch birch for the new walls, stained them then coated them with oil-based Minwax polyurethane. It has been a few weeks and the polyurethane continues to smell when the doors and hatch are closed. The smell is bad enough so that the trailer is not usable. Anybody have any tips on how to remedy the smell?
Thanks in advance.

It will go away. Leave as much ventilation as you can go through the trailer. If you have a garage, leave it in there with the doors open a couple weeks.

Hi- I will put my .02 in... put a fan in there, air movement will help a lot! Maybe 2 fans! Hopefully it's warm enough where you are to facilitate the evaporation of solvents. Also, what he said, time will get it done....Good luck with the project! Gordon

A little late for this project, but next time try the water-based, oil-modified Polyurethane. Quite a bit more expensive, but no odor, a great finish, and water cleanup.

I used water based poly on my build. I also had a lot of water blow through my hurricane hinge in a high wind area and it literally washed off the water based poly that I had on my floor. I ended up using the oil based later on top of the water. It only stinks for awhile. A couple of weeks and you won't notice it any more.
