HF Trailer with 33inchers? 2001 Wrangler

Lets captures all those good off road construction ideas here...

I'm building a trailer luggage box from the left over back frame from a boat trailer for my Jeep TJ. I debated about purchasing a HF 48"x40" short trailer frame, but went this route. In review, I'm not done with trailer frame layout and I've already past the HF cost in hub bearings/seals, additional steel, and I still need 2 4.8x12 4-bolt tire/rims. I'll be adding a Sears CargoX rooftop carrier for now as it was cheap enough ($35 on CL). I'll also keep the smaller tires for now till I can get my box built (better weather).

Anyways, another way of gaining clearance for the taller tires is to lower the suspension. Many trailer frames have drop brackets for the spring mounts. The old Jeep M416 trailer has 2" drop brackets. Its frame is also a 'C' channel design like that of the HF. Just something else to pitch into the design.

3500 lb axle with idler hubs from etrailerpart lists for $84.95 per axle (your selection of width) More with brakes.

To stick that on a HF trailer, you need a ubolt kit (15bucks or so) and axle seats (I think the seats MAY come with the axle, can't remember)

You'll definitely need to install it spring-over on the stock HF springs because the axle is so much larger in diameter.

Hangon... Pics coming....

Ok.. I remembered I had one just like I was describing, so I went a took a pic of it:

You can see that the springs are HF cheapies, and that they bolt up nice. This is a 3500lb axle from etrailerpart with idler hubs. They all come with the brake flanges in this size. I seem to recall it's a different width than the HF axle to accomodate jeep wheels. I'll go measure Hubface to hubface if you want. They don't come this rusty, that's from sitting out in the rain all winter.

Im more interested in getting it lifted up so it matches the jeep, i wont be doing any off roading in it. Ill camp at the beach and things like that sooooo im not too concerned abotu the trailer being off road ready
Whats a 5x8 trailer coast a hf? a 4x8? Think i coudld build out over the tires on the 4x8 and tuck the tires up under the frame? thanks for your time and patience

I'm curious also. How is the project coming along? Any roadblocks?

I'm going to be doing the same project. I ordered a #9 Torflex axle with a 45 degree drop. I also want to use the same 33 x 12.50 tires and rims that are on my Jeep and was wondering how things turned out.

The axle came in today.

I put my spare from the Jeep on it and it will have 19 inches of ground clearance and the floor of the TD will be about 28 inches high.

Much more clearance than the Jeep.

I went with 3500 lb six bolt stub axles from northern . The main reason my 78 Cherokee has a 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern and I only have to lug one 33" spare tire .

The problem is that the Sgt. York program was cancelled and these boxes were designed for that application solely. As far as I know about six or eight of them were built for qual. testing (That’s what I do) and a few survived. The customer requested that my company dispose of them after testing. Getting permission from our customer I was allowed to take two of them .
