New off road build

Postby jamscal » Wed Sep 23, 2009 7:34 pm

Hello all.

I've lurked for quite awhile but recently started my build.

I am a welder/fabricator and will be working in steel.

This is going to be a military inspired build...olive drab, some tank slit windows and other military vehicle details.

Axle is a 3000lb and I welded some mounts to make it spring over.

Jeep wheels came from the junkyard.

I used receiver tubing to bolt the hitch to. I did this to use a lunette or other off-road hitch in the future. ( I will be reinforcing the tongue area)

Trailer is 4x8. I angled the walls out and they're 5' wide.

I'm going to keep the square back, and have the kitchen door open to the side.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks!

Here's a few more pics.

I bought a jack and some misc trailer stuff at Tractor Supply.

This thing is 23" off the ground so I had to make a bracket to 'lower' the jack.

I plan on cutting off the plate and installing a caster somewhere down the road as well.

Finally, I got a few more tubes installed, almost all of the in the roof and not visible in the pic. ..

Thanks for looking.

-James

I couldn't find an olive drab color and my Paint skills aren't the best, but this is basically what I'm going for:

2nd on the welding, I'm jealous. Nice design. As it says below, different is good.

Thanks guys.

I'm waiting on some tubes/ angle and a quote on my sheet.

I did have enough to skin the rear, which is sort of an experiment.

Mocked up the lights as well.

Got some more bracing in, both on the tongue and a few more cross bars.

Sheet metal will be here next Wed.

Thats a really nice looking off-roader. How are you going to layout the interior?

Thanks.

It looks like I'll have just a wall in the back to separate the sleeping area from the galley. Other than that, I haven't thought about it much

Some other details, ideas:

Frame tubing is 2" 11ga. Body tubing is 1" 16ga..

A local salvage place has some engineered cork flooring. I may buy some of that for the floor.

I think it weighs a bit over 400lbs right now, according to my 400lb capacity digital shipping scale.

Nice!

So are you planning gull wing doors or what? That looks like it will be tough to do traditional side hinges with the walls the walls bend under.

I'm going for traditional doors, but agree it will be tough. I'll have to get the clearances right and pay attn. to the weatherstripping.

The 'boatside' look, which I love, has presented several problems like that.

I'm sure I'll have several more.
