New Camper Project!

Postby Dizza » Sat May 25, 2013 9:12 pm

Well, here we go. First post.

I am planning on building myself an offroad tear-drop camper. I have done a fair amount of research on the matter and i believe i am getting closer to kicking it off but I figured I would ask the experts first

So here it is:

It is designed to be towed behind my Discovery 1 and so it has exactly the same wheel track and is designed to fit the same wheels :D

This particular design is still in the early stages but there is going to be a slide out stove on the left side and cupboards above the galley bench. It is primarily to keep the girlfriend happy and drag her along camping.

It will include a water tank mounted in the chassis, a pair of jerry can holders and a 4.5kg gas cylinder mount somewhere.
The box on the draw bar is to hold a pair of 60 litre fridges. One set to fridge and the other freezer.
The whole thing will be constructed from 20mm sandwich panels. (foam sandwiched between 2 sheets of fibreglass)

Do you guys have any suggestions as to changes i should make?

Looking good.

Welcome to the forum.

The kick up over the axle is a great place to locate your water tank, as that will have the least effect on trailer balance regardless of the level in the tank, and will maintain ground clearance.

Having separate storage under the bed that is accessible from outside is also a great plan. However, with the sloping front roof, are you sure you have enough headroom inside?

Are you planning to build your own trailer, and if so, what suspension do you plan on using? (I went with rear YJ leaf springs.)

Good luck. Post lots of pic's, and feel free to ask anything.

What length is your sleeping area? It looks a little short to me. :o

I do like the overall shape of it though.

The Discovery are a very good vehicle so my uncle tells me. :D

Assuming the sleeping area is long enough, and the bulkhead wall remains vertical, you could move the door back over the wheel and but those simple "wheel step ladders" to climb in.

Then you'd sleep with your head in the tall part near the galley.

I agree with the above statement. It looks way short. My sleeping length was about 78" and it was too short. I am 5'10. The sit up height looks short too along with the doors being too small...

That shape looks familiar :) Good luck with the build
