Another newb from ohio

Postby dankspeed » Sat Apr 14, 2007 12:00 pm

Hey Everybody,
I've been lurking for a few weeks now. Thought it was time I bite the bullet and make my first post.
I've ordered the camp pod plans from butler projects and plan to build it myself with help from my brother in-law.
I'm going to tow with my '94 miata . I will be modifying these plans as needed to bring the weight/size down in order to tow safely with the miata.
Looks like a great site with lots of friendly people.
Can't wait to begin the build.

Thanks
Dan :D

Here are some things you can do to help:
- build light;
- get the bottom of the trailer down to somewhere near the same ground clearance as the Miata (in order to reduce overall height):
- build light;
- think about making the body 42" high instead of 48" high (not sure if the Camp Pod is 48"), again to reduce overall height;
- build light.

The obsession with reducing height is to get the trailer as far as possible into the wake behind the car, rather than sticking up above it.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Andrew-
I do plan on making the pod shorter than 48" not sure by how much though.
I'll be using the HF trailer to keep the build simple and move along quicker.
I've read some post where people are "fipping" the axle to lower the trailer. Most likely will be doing this as well.
I would also like to use canvas w/ a zipper as a door like tents do.
Haven't really settled on a design yet. Just like the idea of less weight and ease of use.

If anyone knows of post with talk of canvas and zippers please point me in that direction.
I also will be needing to find a supplier for these items.
Thanks

Dan...you can't really "flip" the axle since most axles have a bow in them that must point to the top...this bow flattens as load is added to the trailer...you can however, move the axle from the bottom of the springs to the top of them...this requires adding/modding the spring mounting pads and possibly notching the frame...I believe there is a section on this located here...

Hey, man. Glad to see you here! Unfortunatley I didn't think to build lower than 48". Thats one thing I'll have to keep in mind-next time. Take a look in my album-I didn't use a frame at all. See you at the gap...LOL

Sorry madjack. What you discribed is what I'm intending to do. Still kinda new to this trailer and TD thing.

MC , My girlfriend and I are also going to MATG.
We're camping at fontana village.
Maybe I'll see ya down there and can check out your TD.

Thanks Mike, I checked out that thread. Very intering stuff there.
Still waiting to receive my plans from butler. I'll have a better idea of what I need to do after I check those out.
Looks like the bulk of the thread discussed axles and trailers. I'm using the entire HF trailer for sure. Just hope I don't have the problems some have had with assembly.
Thanks

Got my plans yesterday. They look good.
It's designed to be 36" tall . I wanted it to be short so this is good news.
Guess the next step is to buy the hitch and trailer and start building.
I'll start another post once I get the build started and have some pics.
Later
