Daniel and my '47 Kit in California

Postby ddavis1946 » Sat Aug 19, 2017 9:23 pm

Hey!
Daniel from northern california here. I spent a lot of time lurking on this forum and others, looking for ideas on the perfect teardrop project for me and my family. After about 2 years of randomly searching local craigslist and eBay ads, I found an original 1947 Kit teardrop. Needs a LOT of work but I'm ready to dive in. I finally joined the forum to get some good ideas and tutorials, but mostly just need motivation from those who have gone through a teardrop restoration before.
Looking forward to being a part of the community!

I salute you on your restoration! I've found that I don't have the character strength to take on restorations.

About 9 years ago we bought a 1946 Modernistic teardrop that was in rough shape. Spent about 9 months restoring it. Not perfect, but we tried to keep it as original as possible. We own two fiberglass campers now so the teardrop only gets used for vintage rallies and car shows. The construction of our teardrop is different than a Kit, so I don't have much advice other than take your time and it will get done eventually.

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement to all. What a great community of teardroppers and campers. Making the restoration slightly more difficult is my 3 year old and 1 year old, and another kiddo on the way. BUT i've got the full support of the wife, and after tent camping in the Sierra's in the spring, and Big Sur last weekend, I think she's ready for me to fully dive in to the project and get us a functional teardrop, mostly just cause she's tired of keeping our cooking stuff in a tub and sleeping on the ground.
The funny thing is with the five of us, I'll still end up sleeping in the tent, with the wife and two or three of the kiddos in the Kit. Oh well, I like tent camping and it's all about being in nature anyways...
The kids are excited about it!
