Hi New Here

Postby tanktank » Mon Dec 17, 2018 8:19 pm

Hi
Ive had an off grid tiny house in the past and am now looking to build a teardrop trailer or something like it.
The big key is I want to build it without bending wood. im looking for input/ideas for building a 4 x 8 but not the curved type. I dont have faith in myself when it comes to the curved wood. Any help is appreciated---thanks

Bending wood is adds strength without a weight penalty. Try not to fear it.

Hello, Tank!

I dont have faith in myself when it comes to the curved wood.

A lot of us would argue that a curved profile is easier than cutting and butting angles. It's just following a pencil line with a jigsaw. The recommended ceiling/roof plywood begs to bend.

Honestly, bending the wood can sometimes be easier that making your "square" joints straight and plumb. And if you decide to build in a few angles, compound miter cuts can be a huge PITA. You may do a search on here for 'squaredrops' and find what you're looking for.

Here's my 'X-Cubed', built in 2014. Not a curve on the thing. But definitely some funky angles.

The Key to putting on a curved roof is the right wood and ratchet straps. With ratchet straps being the key!!

As someone who has built both ... Either built a square box, or go curved! Building somewhere in the middle, with a half-dozen mitered joints, is asking for more hassle than you'd think :D There are lots of threads on the forum about how to properly bend plywood over the roof. It's scary the first time, but not too hard.
