I'm back!

Postby JunkMan » Thu Apr 16, 2020 11:31 am

Been a member for years, but haven't posted in a loooong time. My build got put on hold when I lost my workspace and packed everything up and put it in storage around 2006. I started working for an airline not long after that, so instead of camping, we started flying on our vacations. With the current pandemic my hours have been cut and flying is out, so I decided to revive my teardrop project. My son has been messing with teardrops for several years and has challenged me to finish mine so we can do some camping together.

My build is approximatly 5' x 9'. I made my own trailer frame using a torsion axle. The walls are sandwich type framed with 1" dimensional lumber, luan plywood on the outside, and Baltic Birch inside. I have the sides pretty much finished, some of the interior pieces roughed out, and the rear countertop made. Unfortunatly all of my pics of the build so far appear to be lost. I'll try to get some new ones posted soon.

Yesterday I dug out most of the pieces and mocked them up on the frame so I could get an idea where I was with the build. I found most of the hardware that I bought for it, although there are a few things I am still looking for. Trying to figure out what I originally had planned for it, and am already making changes.

Glad to see that the forum is still going storong, and hope to get some ideas from it, and contribute any knowlege that I am able.

Welcome back. Glad you have a good time now to get things back on the track for your build. After my brother and I finished installing the parts from 4WheelOnline on his truck,we'll check out the neglected travel trailer offered by the old couple neighbors.
Have fun!

Been working on this since the first of the year, but haven't posted anything, so will try to catch up on the progress I have made.

Stripped the old paint off the frame, welded up a couple of holes that were drilled in the wrong place, added some tiedown points to the underside, and added a fresh coat of paint.

Reinstalled the floor and walls, started building the cabinets. Front will have doors on the outer cabinets, open cubbies in the center. Rear cabinet has sliding doors.

Glued up the aluminum on the sides and cut out the door openings. Started putting the plywood on the roof.

Before gluing up the sides I test fit them and rough cut the shape with an air nibbler. After gluing them up I trimmed as much of the excess with the nibbler, then went back and trimmed the little that was left with a pair of avation snips, getting it almost flush. I'll dress up the edges with a file.

What kind of glue did you use? Did you treat the plywood walls with a sealer first?

I used a construction type adhesive, don't recall which one at the moment. No, I didn't seal the plywood first, probably would have been a good idea.

I started this build almost 20 years ago and have forgot a lot of the things that I had planned to do with it then. Getting back in to it, I am realising that I would do some things different if I was starting over. Oh well, a good reason to plan another build!
