Hello again from WV

Postby wvmedic » Thu Mar 09, 2023 12:09 pm

Hello all, a new introduction from me. I have been a member here for goodness I do not remember for how long, it has been a long time though. I was starting a build long ago but, life got in the way. Now that I am semi retired, part time job four days every other week with nine days off in between. I plan on building a teardrop, likely a 5x10 based on the generic Benroy on a 5x8 NT trailer. Not sure if I need to stretch the trailer or not....

My new Bride and I want to travel out west, Yellowstone, Moab, North rim of the Grand Canyon and the like. Will be towing with a 2022 Jeep Gladiator, I had been considering a cargo trailer but have changed my mind and now want a teardrop. Hopefully will be easy on the wallet to tow behind the Jeep and a big step above tent camping. Don't mind tenting but, setup and take down for over night stays doesn't appeal to me at all.

Thank you Guy's, I'm excited to read your book Tony. It should be arriving today, unfortunately I am back and forth now on the teardrop vs cargo trailer. Sourcing materials for the teardrop is looking to be pretty expensive with shipping on the wood. I have no local sorce and quoted shipping on the bendable Birch is $200, shipping NT trailer is $235. I haven't even got a quote on the 5x10 plywood yet, so I'm not sure. Still contemplating a 5x10 teardrop vs 5x10 cargo trailer.

Holler when you have questions.

I have no local sorce and...

I'm three hours from the nearest box store and two hours from the closest 3-pack of whitey-tighties. Where are you?

@tony.latham, Charleston WV area. We have the Lowe's, Home Depot and Menards. I don't know of any specialty shops around or in WV unfortunately.

@tony.latham, thank you very much. One shop is only 161 miles from my house. What is your thoughts on Okoume BS 1088 or Meranti BS 1088 for skinning the walls?

What is your thoughts on...

They both look like high-quality stuff–-I think they would be fine.

Thank you Tony, I've called a few places today and have been told that Baltic birch isn't being allowed across our borders at the moment. I was also told that rumor has it there is some trickling in from our Neighbor's to our North. I can order the bendable birch from MA and pick up 4x8 sheets of the other in OH.
