That car port is 150 mph rated and you can bump that up to 180mph for mo $$. No direct sun, pine needles, sap, hail or rain. Sadly I can not afford it though. But if I could I would. But you know what? Then my solar panel would be of no use IN storage. DUHH. That settles that.

Mcdave I think you nailed it and I may do the very same thing. Thanks for the info brother! :D

I am not sure how I'd do that with the type awning have. I'll need to study it a bit more. In any case, I am primarily just looking for a storage solution.

Hmmmm. Just once about a year or two ago. Out Of ignorance and desperation I did spray the whole trailer down with the pressure cleaner and bleach. Just once because the whole trailer was green with mold. I regretted it almost immediately as I thought it may have chalked up the finish some. Maybe that knocked off a year or two on the life of the fabric? I don't mind a five year life span but three is too short. That may or may not be the culprit but I will never do that again. Something to think about. I forgot all about that.

On the "Carefree" type awnings I have seen where the first 18" or so from the roller was made of aluminium slats. Sorta like a venetian blind so when the roller is all the way up the vinyl is wrapped in a layer of aluminium slats. Also I have seen aluminium covers that the roller tucks into. They have a hinged lid and some type of latch I would guess. Of course there is the split convoluted pipe that hides the roller. And then there is a vinyl strip that is adhered to the vinyl and protects the material on the outside of the roll. You guys may want to work a 2 part solution, Like the split pipe for now while you find a clever way to mimic the hinged box or some other solution. The split pipe wouldn't be a major investment and if it helped or solved the issue, then Bob's your uncle. If not, no biggie. I remember getting advice from spotman about the pipe. he said it worked well. See if you can get his wisdom.

Tommy, I am taking off a few days at the end of Sept. (use it or lose it scenario at work).

I plan to camp Ocala a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night Sept 28/29/30... . If you can make it, that would be great.

Anyone else also... Martin if you could make that trip.. would be fun.

Ok. If its in the mid 80s maybe. I am trying to save and accrue what little leave I have for the cooler days. I am going to work some OT and use it as comp time instead of $$. I really hope to be up there a lot this year. Let you know and thank you for the invite. Believe me I want to camp and ride in a big way.

I think a total right knee replacement is in my near future. I think this could be my last season on this knee. So I want to get my moneys worth out of it before then. Old age man. Depressing.

Ride/limp on till I cant take it anymore.

Ok. Great if you can go. I understand if you can't. I just need to burn some vacation days or loose them. I'll camp anytime of year if I can get the time.

I like the idea of a "sacrificial" piece of material over the first 18 inches or so of the awning starting at the attachment rail up top. When it rolls up, it will be the outside cover to absorb all the uV's, but not be integral to the awning function or shear strength. I am going to work on that idea. Thanks.

Don, when I ordered my fabric I had to pick a color for a " weather shield ". I tried to get clarification on what a weather shield was but could never reach anyone at country rv parts. I assumed it was some sort of spray on stuff to block UV damage. After researching some forums it may be a flexible metal tube that stays attached permanently. Some how into the grove on top along with the fabric. One piece. We shell see but its a place to start and may give you some ideas. If that is the case I will just seal the ends over. Maybe a couple of one liter plastic coke bottles cut to fit for both ends. Zip tied in place for storage only. Or something like saran rap Low tech here. Not sure but I may be half way there already. Let you know. I chose onyx color for the weather shield as that is the color of my fabric. but what the hell is a weather shield?

Should be here in a week or two. This may be unique to dometic. I understand the 9000 model comes with it stock. Mine is an 8500 and it an after market thing I think.

Let you know.

Very interesting.
I can see where something like that, if it is similar to what I am thinking, would be easy to add on during installation.

My awning is new enough that I'd take it back apart to install after the fact if it will result in the awning lasting a few more years and looking better for longer. Anxious to see what you actually get with your order.

Yes I did read that the only down fall was that you had to remove and or replace the currant fabric. But of course I am doing that so no problamo.

What bothers me is this is the second replacement and the other replacements did not come with it. I don't recall who I purchased them from though. It seems to good to be true. $225.00 for fabric and metal cover? Commercial covers go for $80-100.00 just alone. Hope I am not wrong! :worship:

I will search for a pic on line maybe.

Dometic weather shield. 8500 or 9000 model

If you are getting the weather shield with your fabric, you are all set. That shield is tje metal louvers that roll up and go between the rail and awning fabric so it ends up on the outside during storage. They are expensive standalone, but I'd get one when I replace the first time. I have an idea that will do something similar as mentioned with vinyl fabric and just velcro-ing where it needs to reside.

Looks like it or similar. The one I was looking at connects to the rail and the fabric connects to it in the same way as it did to the rail. Basically just and extender that ends up on the outside on roll up just as the last part of the fabric closet to the rail does now.
