Hi guys, I have been a lurker on here for awhile now and I also have my own 6' x 12' conversion under way but Lets just say it's a long term project at this point...

I use my trailer for transporting model boats that I race and at our last event here in Houston I came across this conversion and thought I would post pics as I think it's an interesting idea.

So lets reduce the interior size.....

What's the point? Why not have a longer trailer?

They are limited to this size trailer due to their tow vehicle.

Interior size is still the same when the slide out is pushed in for towing minus a few inches on either side and more camping room when extended.

Seems like a good idea for some. If properly designed, the unit could still be used with the slide in like for a quick one night stop, and then put the slide out for longer stays. I wonder about the "mechanics" of sliding the unit out. Is it just dragged out, is it on some kind of rollers? I think it does have possibilities.

This makes no sense. Your increasing the weight by 5 additional walls.

There was one trailer that had a deck for an ATV and the slider pulled over the deck....

For all the interesting discussion. We don't know a couple of things. What is the "slider" made of, and maybe, like a lot of us, the owner / builder went with what he had. He had a 6 X 10 or 6 X 12 and wanted more room so he enlarged what he had. Pretty resourceful I think. Maybe not for me, but probably works for them.

Perhaps the owner's family grew enough to need the extra space...

It looks to me like the extra enclosed space is supported on the drop-down ramp. Other people might have chosen to enclose the same area with a tent or canvas enclosure. If the trailer is air-conditioned, the slide-out box would do a better job of keeping the cold in.

I'd love to know more details of its construction, weight, sliding mech, etc.

Here's a link to a cool TD with a slide out. The workmanship is great. I have camped with these folks and really admire the work put in to make the slide look so professional.
