Ordering windows

Postby milkbone » Sat Sep 25, 2010 9:57 am

My trailer wall thickness is 1 1/2". When I order my windows do I need to get a trim ring for the exact thickness or can I use a trim ring 1 1/4" thick? Also do I need to use any kind of putty or sealant to help seal the trim?
Thanks

while I have never installed new windows I have replaced them in a travel trailer I had.
the two halves did not touch when they were installed.
I would be interested in hearing from those who have done an install.

I just installed a window in my conversion. Order the trim ring for the thickness of the trailer walls. Mine were 1 1/2" thick, and that's what I ordered. The dealers on e-bay all say order the exact thickness.

I asked the same question about sealant and was told not to use any. The rubber ring on the outer portion of the window is supposed to crush down and conform to the outside surface of the trailer. Works so far...

SmilinJack,

Do you have a link for the windows you used?

Thanks,
Jason

The window I used came from Frank Bear:

One thing I will mention is that Fred does not include screws with the window. You'll have to make a trip to a hardware store for the proper screws. And it's about a 2 week wait if you have to order an "other than standard" trim ring...

Here's a link that I referenced when doing the install:

http://www.motionwindows.com/installation-guide.php

There are also several threads on this site with good information regarding window installation. Check out Prem's "A 12 Ft Featherlite Conversion" thread, page 26. About half way down the page he tells you "HOW I INSTALL RADIUSED CORNER RV WINDOWS IN A CARGO TRAILER." There are several other threads on window installation as well...

Good luck with the installation. Just remember to measure twice (or three times) and cut once. I won't tell you how I know...

Also, check out the Addendum I posted about installing trim rings. Might help you solve quickly any problems or conundrums you encounter:
