laminate floor

Postby hberg » Sat Oct 16, 2010 8:34 pm

Has anyone put in a laminate floor? What do you think are the pros and cons? It seems pretty simple in a cargo trailer...much easier than described here. http://www.modmyrv.com/2008/08/05/rv-laminate-flooring

I am going to install this in my house and will buy extra to go in my trailer.
I was going to install it in my trailer but I already had some stick down flooring, and it looks great but it has already started to come up after just a few months.

It works great in an RV, but assuming you are building a traditional TD, why use it at all since the whole floor will be covered by a mattress? Why add the weight when so little will be seen? Vinyl flooring makes more sense.

Sorry, didn"t read closely re. cargo trailer. Still, same sentiments, vinyl if weight is an issue.

Sounds like a good idea for a CT. It's tough stuff and looks great. You can use the thinner less expensive type to save some weight. Just make sure and leave a slight gap around the edges as it does expand and contract a bit with temp changes.

please keep in mind laminate will buckle and warp if it gets wet below the protected surface.

Laminate is used a lot in commercial RVs with good results. Although it is generally glued down to the floor rather than installed as a floating floor. I think a laminate floor gives a nice touch over linoleum.

laminate is not designed to be glued to the floor because it must be able to expand and contract due to temperature and humidity changes, else it will peak at the seams.

Thanks for all the good advice.

After reading your responses and talking to the sales people I went with vinyl plank flooring. The laminate can't get wet or the connections go bad. The vinyl plank went down super easy on my rectangular surface, and was just as cheap by the time you buy underlayment for the laminate. Thought about vinyl sheets, but for seven feet of with and it gets sold in 6 or 12 foot widths it didn't make sense.
