Here are some new photos. I have boxed in the rounded front of the trailer, making a kind of alcove. I will be putting the plastic drawer set dead center in the front, topped with a countertop, flanked by cabinets. Right now I have done a mock up using insulation board to experiment with the concept. I have the carpet put on the sides and a chair rail, which will need some sort of finish. The $10 HD paneling turned out pretty good, although I think it is probably a bit fragile regarding scrapes and scratches. I have decided to not use the little green plastic box as an electrical panel, but will install the switches on the left side of the alcove on a door of some sort. Speaking of switches, DO NOT BUY THE CHEAP TOGGLE SWITCHES SOLD BY SCHUCKS. Three of the four fell apart when I tried to unscrew the connectors... not good.

Just a progress picture. Discovering lately that I am not much of a finish carpenter....

Trial of the ceiling tile concept, using a lower rail that has a routed groove and an upper batten securing the top and providing a trim where the tile meets the ceiling paneling.

Some updated photos. As you can tell, I am keeping most of the trailer open for cargo business when necessary. THe only build-ins are in the front 1.5' of the trailer. Still need to get paneling glued to the bottom cabinet doors. Lots of little trim stuff to do. Going fly fishing with my brother next weekend at Duck Valley, NV and decided to clear it out to see how it works. I put in the cot I borrowed from my B-in-Law, with a costco pad on top. Seems comfy. I will be bolting down the etrack tomorrow so that I can use it to haul the KLR on the fishing trip (fish may not bite).

I did use the carpet panels for the curve of the ceiling, which was a pain in the a++, and I'm not proud of the workmanship. But it will do for now.



Here's a couple of great finds from a local thrift store, a 5 gallon igloo water cooler in perfect shape ($6! ) and a really nice pair of Tasco 12 x 50 binoculars, armored ($6 also!). The binocs seem to have really nice optics. looking forward to some star gazing. The Water cooler will serve as my water system.


Incidently, I purposefully left one of the 12v lites on in the trailer to see what kind of battery life I can expect. At 26 hours it was still going pretty strong. I was pleasantly surprised. I figure for warm weather camping I can probably get about 5 days of useful battery life if i'm careful. Plus, I have a couple of nice HFT LED lites that I have equipped with some good quality NiMH AAA batteries from Amazon (Amazon Basics NiMH are a bargain!) The lights will last about 6 hours on a set of batts. I will bring some backup batteries as well.

UPDATE: That cot turned out to be a fiendish torture device! Horrible... time for plan "B", what ever that might be...

Took the trailer on a fishing expedition to the Duck Valley Indian Reservation in Owyhee, NV last weekend with my brother and a group of fly fishing fanatics. Very un-developed camping. No water, no bathrooms, no shade unless you bring some. Very rough road. Trailer worked great, though I need to do a lot of organizing/storage work in it. Very beautiful area. Amazing bird life and wide open skies.

I think I may name the trailer Rin-Tin-Tent...


The last photo shows how I secured the large storage boxes and the 5-gal igloo cooler at the back of the trailer. I used a harbor freight tools pickup bed adjustible cargo bar. Worked fine.

Here are three more photos from this last weekend.

This weekend I took the trailer and my KLR motorcycle to Stanley, Idaho in the Sawtooth mountains in South Central Idaho. I got into the area after dark and drove around for about 2 hours finding all the campsites "full". So eventually I gave up, and discovered a bunch of cargo trailers assembled for the following days' Mountain Mama Arts and Crafts Festival in Stanley. The sign said "no camping in the city limits", but another sign said "vendor parking only." So I became a vendor, and bedded down for the evening.


the next morning, I opened the back door and here is the view I had.


After watching the festival set up,

I drove around and discovered that there were a lot of "unimproved" campsites that were not among the "campsite full" sites... So I found a nice quiet spot near Stanley Lake, and unloaded the bike there.


I spent a good part of the day motoring about on my bike and took some photos:








Saturday night, I found myself standing in the dark, staring up at the sky, which displayed the most incredible array of stars, planets and galaxies I have ever seen. Amazing!

Sunday Morning, I packed up and returned home, Via Idaho City.


Lessons learned:

Undeveloped campsites are almost always available even when the developed sites are full.
I need to spend some time organizing this trailer, and install more built-in storage.
Need a screen door of some sort.
Before I left I installed interior bolt locks on the back doors and secured the bar lock so as not to be locked in...
Never EVER apply the choke on a motorcycle at 6200 feet elevation... almost flooded it!
I now know that I can pick up the motorcycle if it falls over, which it did after I got home while unloading it down the ramp (no harm to me or the bike.)

Yep. I've never been told there's no where to park it.
I need more fixed enclosed storage too.
I bought a MagicMesh door screen. I had to trim the bottom off and wife resewed the hem. works fine for us.
