6x14-V Featherlite Horse Trailer Conversion

Postby Hiflyer » Fri May 18, 2012 9:44 pm

First off thanks for all the great discussions that have happened here !
This past winter I took an honest month or two and read thru the site pretty thoroughly ;)

Lots of kijiji hunting and a lot of nada until today.

Just picked up a used Featherlite 6x13 V-nose Tandem Horse Trailer. Inside height is 7'4"

That said, it's already 90% perfect ! So much is so well setup as a horse trailer it's not funny...

It was a friend of mine who did a conversion with a camper/horsetrailer that got me to thinking on a cargo trailer before I found this site.
He had his wired up to carry a Pimped out Golf Cart on his camping trips. It was set to charge up the cart as well as carry bicycles on the walls. He also had a tool box mounted on the wall. I know he's gotten many offers on his rig.

I believe that no one here would complain about camping beside a horse trailer,
but from reading my friends trail riding magazine
there have been owners turned away from campgrounds when they tried
to camp in nonhorse campgrounds they were told no horse trailers allowed.
the article said that the trailers were clean and they didn't have horses.
anyone who has looked at or price horse trailers with living spaces know they are not cheap
and have some very good layouts I especially like the neo-angle showers some have.
I just wanted to give you a heads up so you could be ready if it ever comes up.

I've seen horsetrailer/camper combos at the State Parks around here for years. Rarely is there a horse involved.

This was one of the web sites that inspired me to finish mine a little nicer like it's a mancave on wheels.

1) removed all inside rubber padding including floor
2) removed inside lower aluminum panels on both sides
3) vacuumed & then pressure washed out the bottom of both sides
4) started insulation on the roof

I don't think anyone will complain about that trailer, The ones people in the book had were 5-wheel with living quarters.
My friend who rescues horses, she has 40 now is looking for a nice 2-3 horse trailer the ones she has are for the draft horses
which have gone on to horsey heaven dixie & dempsey brother and sister 27 and 28 when they died.
we have looked at way to many looking for that one "thats just right" which we all know doesn't exist

have to agree that there is no 100% perfect trailer ;)

This one had way too much going for it to pass it up!

Super happy with it as I get more and more into it

Looks Great so far. Keep posting pictures for everyone to see.

Now you can go sell all that extra aluminum and pay for your insulation

Took a bunch of measurements today after removing the front carpet

those 2 cabinet areas are also 42" tall inside.

I'm thinking the one just inside the door will be built in as a cabinet with drawers & the further one in will house the batteries and all that kinda of stuff

Nice trailer, I was hunting for something simular but had to give up. One suggestion on your battery placement. They need to be seperate from your interior. If they are inside, they really need to be in a sealed box that is vented to the outside. You don't want to expose the interior to battery gases.

I enjoy watching all the builds. Lots of good ideas. This old dog ain't too old to learn a new trick or two.

Dadgum it! I cut that board 5 times and it's still too short!
