Re: Door lock recall

Postby TimC » Tue Jul 18, 2017 7:46 am

Glad I have two doors... I locked one door last weekend and the deadbolt jammed. I called the company after discovering that there is still a recall in effect for this lockset.

http://www.fastecindustrial.com/recall/default.html

So, according to the gentleman at Fastec my key code, CW415 is not effected by the problem. I informed him that it indeed was as it is right now jammed and the key was removed with the lock in the 9 o'clock position. He said that can't happen and the he can't help! Great customer service.

As a result I couldn't get the lockset removed as the door was jammed shut and I needed to remove the door side strike plate to remove it. I was about to pry the lock out hoping it wouldn't ruin the door frame and I thought maybe I should try to remove the door hinges and pull the whole door out. Success! However, I still can't remove the lock cylinder. I'm hoping that my local RV joint can help me get the cylinder removed as the manufacturer refuses to help because this can't happen with the later versions of cylinder (CW415). I hope it's like the Yakima cylinders where you just insert a special key to remove the cylinder, however, I can't get the key I have to go in, so...

TimC, Howdy;

Sounds like you could use a LOCKSMITH to help ya out.
It's what they do ... the "local RV joint" doesn't do lock sets
on a regular basis and they could damage your stuff in their
attempts.

If you take the time to watch the video in the link you posted
you'll see that there is a key/tool to remove the lock set.

Thanks Hank, I did watch the video and I'm aware of the special key to remove the cylinder (as I noted it is the same as my Yakima rack cylinders, but that yakima key doesn't fit this cylinder). Ultimately the problem is you need to get that special key into the lock to release it and because the internals of the cylinder is turned inside no key will go into it. The local locksmith, who seems to be an honest guy from his answer, told me he would charge more labor to repair than the $25-$30 to buy a new one on ebay.

The issue isn't so much that I need to replace this thing. My issue is the manufacturer will not recognize that the jamming of the deadbolt portion is happening in more than their keycode series they are recalling. Just received a second email from the Fastec folks and they just repeated what they told me on the phone about my keycode not being in the recall. Apparently they are waiting for the CPSC to issue a safety recall before they will admit this series is also a safety hazard.

Caveat emptor!

My mom's TT door lock is on the recall. But they have never sent her notification. She hasn't bothered with it.

Update... Still no satisfaction from the manufacturer. I cleaned the cylinder while it was inside the lockset with a de-greaser, then lubed it up well with a light lubricating oil. No dice. Key will still not go in. I turned the lockset over and hit the cylinder from the inside lightly with a 5/16" bolt. That bent the small flange after breaking the high quality pot metal frame of the cylinder which holds the cylinder inside. One more light wack and out it came. Cylinder was defective anyway, so, no loss there. Now I call the manufacturer and ask if the new cylinders they sell come with the special plug removal key. Nope, you have to be a certified locksmith or RV service center to have one of those. Please call your local RV Service Center. I called the two biggest RV dealers in the Green Bay and N. Milwaukee area and they tell me they can't get the plug removal key. I told them both the web site and phone number to order the keys. Um, no thanks Sir. Apparently they would rather not deal with that. Of course they don't when they can claim to customers that the locksets are throw-aways and they'll have to pay $35 plus labor for a new lockset to be installed. What a bunch of BS.

Update to the update... I called around for access to the "Special key" to remove/install the lock cylinders. Biggest RV place in Green Bay says no. Camping World north of Milwaukee never called back. A smaller RV place in Escanaba, MI called back and I can bring the lock in to have the new cylinder installed, however, they don't have cylinders for sale.

I've ordered two new cylinders from FIC (I had to buy them as they still don't admit that my keycode is defective like the recalled ones). Does anyone know if I need the special key to install the cylinders? The old cylinder is removed as I mentioned in a previous post so I'm hoping a trip to Escanaba isn't required. I'm hoping with a little fiddling I can insert the cylinder successfully.

I'm going to service both my locks and their cylinders when I install the new cylinder. Using a degreaser, blowing out with an air gun and re-lubing with a light machine oil. I am hoping cleaning these things regularly will keep the things from jamming again.

I hope Mom has another way out of the RV (or a 3# sledge hammer) should the deadbolt jam. That is the reason for the recall. It's only a phone call or web page input to get new cylinders and keys. That's if the keycodes are on their list.

But she's to old to go out the windows. This is her last summer, she said she's to old and doesn't enjoy it anymore.

Last update... on my lockset situation. I received the new cores (cylinders) and made a road trip over the weekend stopping at several RV "Superstores" asking for assistance to get the cores installed. I got a few strange looks with one escort to their shelf with new locksets and at least one laugh and a "good luck with that". So helpful! I returned home and decided to spend a few minutes fiddling with the core to see if it would go in somehow. Don't ask me to repeat the process and I really didn't pay much attention to how it was positioned when it slipped in, but, success. So, removing the lockset was a challenge; the whole door removed at the hinges. Then the removal of the jammed core for the deadbolt was a simple wack with a 5/16" bolt and a small hammer. For about $12 I received two new cores and two new keys that fit all my locks.
