WiFi Booster

Postby flboy » Wed Sep 20, 2017 12:22 pm

I got a Wifi Range extender (amplified with 8db of antenna gain) in the mail yesterday to wire up. Same idea as the cell phone booster, but for Wi-Fi. Going to try it out at Biketoberfest in a few weeks. Hopefully will be able to pickup Wi-Fi from nearby hotels or etc. or any unsuspecting soul who doesn't secure their WiFi . It is supposedly good enough to boost bi-directionally for a few miles line of sight, but I know advertisements like that are only under optimum and ideal conditions and are reliant on the Wi-Fi hotspot a bit also as you need some small signal returned to amplify. Even if I can't always get a mile or so, I can see when boon-docking in Walmart parking lots or etc.. I'll be able to pull WiFi from the parking lot. Also, I should be able to park somewhat near a Starbucks or McDonald's (or etc.) and get their WiFi under the right conditions. We'll see if it is true. I know folks do it in urban places all the time. Theoretically it is possible and this does amplify both ways. Even with decent signal nearby, these devices, if nothing else, should improve the data rates as the boosted signals usually don't have the same throughput errors as noisy or weaker signals. Same idea as having one bar or 5 on your cell phone. You will notice how much faster the data is with 5 bars over 1.

In any case, Just another antenna to put on.. It will be at home with the rest of them. ;-)

Pics to come when I install. Here is a pic of what it looks like.

Backup Camera

Postby flboy » Wed Sep 20, 2017 6:21 pm

I finally installed the backup camera so it is easier to connect the trailer when solo. I got a real small screen as it will be used mainly for connecting the trailer . It is mounted right where you see it and the camera directed to get a good view of hitch and trailer. It only comes on when I put the truck in reverse.

Look, I can quit any time I want. :D

OK Don.

I'm giving you the flux capacitor challenge. I believe your ready. No more solar. Time for you to upgrade.
Here's the hardware you'll be given. Can you do this?

Hey seriously. I called the Lake George Ranger District. Crews are out and working. He said call back middle of next week. Might be all clear. :worship:

Are you still going next week if its open?

flboy, Howdy;

I applaud your efforts to improve your WIFI experience. All of the 'extenders'
promise a greater range. From my practical experience at several RV locations that
I have stayed at and lived in I've had my try with various 'systems', The best that i
found is to get a wire from the phone box into the RV.
The Campgrounds will broadcast to the best of their ability or as well as they can
afford to pay for their gear. My last dive into the 'extender' pool was this from Jefa Tech.
https://www.jefatech.com/products/rv-kit-usb
If, perhaps, the campground was using a stronger broadcast signal (they were 100 yds away),
I might have gotten a signal. As it was and remains, they just have a regular router like
I have from my internet supplier. Generally I've found WIFI to be measured in square footage
of coverage instead of distance. Just my experience ...

Tommy, I am going camping one way or another next week. I may be in a private campground if I can't get a Ocala NF spot due to closures.

Hank, I am willing to bet you are correct in the campgrounds and etc.. This range extender will depend on the WiFi being shared and it's signal quality. Alot of the Hotels and commercial places like Wal-Mart use the latest gear and put out max allowable signal levels so user experience is good. In any case, at worst, I'll receive inside the CTC what I'd only get outside sitting in a chair under the awning. Inside the CTC it is hard to receive any signal (FM radio or otherwise). It is all shielded by the aluminum and metal roof. Some campers do better because the roofs are rubber and sides are a composite fiberglass. That will weaken some, but not totally block the signals.

So at a minimum, I won't have to be outside the CTC to use WiFi if available. I didn't spend a lot for this antenna just because I don't think the more expensive type would do any better for the reasons you mention. I'll probably be relying on my Cellphone booster and 3g/4g data more anyhow and that booster does work so far.

Besides... I have a disease and can't help myself. :-)

I took it all in good fun. Thanks Tommy!

McDave, you are right, when parked and antennas deployed, it may start to look like some sort of mobile surveillance rig. ;-)

Brings back memories from my old Army days in Electronic Warfare systems. I may have to break out the camo paint for the CTC. Lol

The KTM lives! Spent time fixing the broke stuff today and gave her a bath. A lot of electrical shorts and damage behind the headlight from when that tree pulled out in front of me. :-) Fuses blown... they did their job.

Rewired a bunch of stuff. The starter wasn't bad after all. It was the starter switch wire all messed up in the bundle.

In any case, a few more things to do before I load it up Wednesday night. I looked at the carb float. No idea why it was sticking. I cleaned it all up good and oiled the insides with Marvel Mystery Oil. Heading for a renegade ride and camping trip to ONF Thursday AM. If the Forest is closed, I will camp in a private campground nearby. I'll run the forest anyhow. Chances of seeing anyone slim. Chances of them catching me ... slimmer. :-)

Been a while. Looking forward to this. Taking the chainsaw. I am sure firewood will be plentiful and nearby.

Cool man. I know you guy's can use some R&R after the last few weeks, you deserve it too. If you are flyin solo that private camp seems like a good bet right now. Very cool to see ya gettin' all renegade. Its good for your spirit, but keep that stuff down low till it's done. Eyes and ears are everywhere. Just one old outlaws thoughts. Have a great, fun, safe trip. Let it all hang out, I got yer bail.

Got the TV cleaned up and serviced this weekend. Been about a year since I put a hand wax on it. There was this film on the truck from the hurricane. Not sure what it was.

flboy, Howdy;

Most likely the film was salt residue. Fl. ain't wide enough to have anyone
to not be effected by salt in the air and that's 365/6. Y'all just got a heapin'
helpin' with Irma.
