I had a Chevrolet with the 5.3 in it and I went up one tire size and it turned into a total turd.

Nice truck. Looks great with the new tires and rims.

Thanks and no.. did not... doesn't change the gearing enough to make any big difference IMHO. It has a 3.73 rear differential.... so good and low already. Not sure what was with your vehicle... but my guess is that the tires were maybe coincident?

I will check my speed with the GPS next time on highway, but when I did the same on my F150 a while back.. it only changed by ~1.2 MPH @ 70 MPH, but size difference was less.

Thanks Richard. I will be a while yet on the new build. Will not start until I return from my trip out West in January. Likely will be out there a few months in current CTC. I am narrowing down the type/size of trailer and floorplan however.

Packing for a 4 day trip to the nearby Ocala National Forest on Tuesday. I have not had my trusty 2005 KTM-450EXC in the CTC for a few years. It will be good to get some seat time on this bike. The CTC looks big with just this bike on board. Looks real full with the Kingpin.

Don, haven't seen the pup in a while; you leave her up north? How did she like her adventure?

Hi Harry. Here's a current pic of Lex. She is 7 months old now and getting big. She did great on the trip... a great travel companion. She is getting use to being at home again. I will take her with me again in January when I go out West.

Had a good 4 day camp in Ocala National Forest this week. Maiden voyage with the new Tow Vehicle... Tows very nicely.. MPG "nothing to write home about". Also, the trusted KTM-450EXC is back on the trail! Had a great time. The CTC did well..

Self Adjusting Brakes Upgrade

Postby flboy » Sat Nov 28, 2020 6:43 pm

Time for some new brakes on the CTC. I adjust them and they just do not stop like they did when new. Wiring is good in trailer and controller is brand new (integrated into F250). Turns out, it is less expensive to buy new assemblies. I upgraded to the self adjusting brakes. They really do not cost much more and continually adjust when you apply brakes via the little cable in the pic. Sort of like how parking brakes in old cars use to adjust when you applied brakes in reverse. I like the set it and forget it aspect of these brakes.

I will let you know how they work. I want to make sure I have great brakes for the mountain passes and etc. during my trip out West in the New Year. I did not get the Diesel in my new F250 as I do not ever anticipate towing >9,000lbs and it is a daily driver with short trips to the store so I do not want the complexity and expense of the diesel, but I sure would have liked the exhaust braking.

BTW, Etrailer.com is awesome to do business with. Had these here quicker than I really needed. I also ordered a Timbren Suspension Enhancement System for the Rear Axle of the F250. I think these will meet my needs and they are set it and forget it compared to air bags and do not affect the unloaded ride. My CTC hardly squats the F250 anyhow ( a little over 1 inch)... but it provides some benefits akin to airbags by just replacing the existing stops. We will see how the loaded ride is.. I may not like them. I am thinking of getting a slide in "backpack camper (pop top type)" for some occasional backwoods/overland camping where I could never get a trailer... so they will come in handy for that in any case.

Hi Don,
The new TV looks great. I have the Timbren on my F150. Loaded with travel trailer, the ride is great. Unloaded, the ride is unchanged except for large dips/potholes. In this situation, the rear suspension will “kick”. It’s not too bad though. I’m glad I installed them.
Take care, Tom

I just went down that same road this past May. The brakes are weak and the adjusters are not reliable. Yes, they are installed and adjusted properly. After a lot of research and talking to Etrailer (Dexter was not available due to limited staffing because of the Corona crap.), the brake drums are supposed to be replaced anytime the magnets are replaced. I did not know this and my drums only had a very slight ripple where the magnets make contact with each drum. I'm debating going to disk brakes instead of purchasing drums and hoping they work. I regret not going the disk route.

Disc rakes would be nice, but I am not ready to put out the $ for that. Maybe my next build. Thanks for the tip on the drums. I may find a place to get these turned instead of replacing however.

I understand completely. I have about 57,000 miles on my cargo trailer and the drums have very little wear. I did my brakes for automatic adjusting and since I was in there to do the bearings and seals. The seals needed replacing, the bearings did not.

If you have your drums cut? They need to cut the surface were the magnet makes contact. I have no idea what the "texture" would need to be for that? I know that's important were the shoes make contact. On a side note; don't forget to bed the new brakes properly, that's important.

Bedding new brakes:
When done working on the brakes, take it for spine. Accelerate up to about 45 mph and then brake as hard as you
can down to about 10 mph without stopping. (For a trailer, I use the manual lever on the brake controller.) Repeat
that 6 to 10 times, while never braking to a complete stop. Then drive back to park and let the brakes cool. Try to
brake as gently as possible when coming to a complete stop. Park vehicle and release brakes as soon as possible.

I found this out the hard way. There is a lot of info on the web university. Good luck
