Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

The brakes adjusted up well on my trip to SC and are working great. They will slow down the truck on off ramps by themselves when manually applied.

My new F250 has electronic sway control built into the braking system, so the trailer brakes need to do thier job for that to be effective.

Preparing to leave Florida for Quartzsite Arizona and beyond with the CTC in a week or so. Will be on the road about 3 months this time. I plan on some dirtbike riding in the desert and numerous adventures to start 2021..I think the CTC is up for some extended boondocking. That's what I designed it for in addition to being a toy hauler with creature comforts.

6*12 Overland/Offroad CTC

Postby flboy » Mon Jan 11, 2021 7:49 am

I have went full circle on my next build. I believe it will be a 6*12 built specifically for 1 person. Will have all amenities (hot shower) and be off road capable. Going to get a straight axle and flip it for extra clearance. I have the 7*18 for when I travel with the wife and it works great. I just need something I can get way back in the woods with by myself. Thought about a slide in pop-up truck camper.. but still need to have the dirtbike so would have to tow it. Thought about an overland trailer with rooftop tent, but that presents a problem for Lex (my GSD).

A 6*12 should track behind the truck well and be small enough to manage offroad. Criteria is I will still need to be able to access bed and other amenities with dirtbike on board. Will be a floorplan challenge, but I have some ideas. No black tank (Thetford portable cassette toilet) and small gray tank for on the road showers. Some solar with a DC fridge. Portable stove that can be used inside or taken outside. Small sink, etc..

Will start another thread for new build... it will be in the March timeframe when I start since I am leaving for Arizona and etc.. in a week or so with the current CTC for a few months to explore the desert.

I have a friend who is building a 87 blazer with a Cummins swap, he currently is building a camper to go in the bed ( is it a bed still in a blazer?)

Could you forgo the trailer if you used a hitch mount bike rack?
I know the harbor freight hitch mount rack is all but garbage but you could fab up something better

The downside being you bike is out in elements, thief’s can get to it, I guess it’s also in the way of a door if you want in the camper

Never mind. Trailer, I can’t imagine moving my bike to get in the camper.

Exactly. Thought about hitch mount, but have to remove to access trailer. I think a 6x12 will work well enough offroad and give me plenty of options.

I seen a picture of a trailer with a half width ramp, instead of the whole back of the trailer being a door half was solid.
That could make for some different layouts

I am thinking of going with Barn doors in any case.

flboy, Howdy;

You'd like Barn Doors, you can make some slots like they do for trailers designed for car haulin'
and slide your ramps under the floor with a bolt or pin to keep them from slidin' out on their own.
just an idea...

Hi Hank. That is what I was thinking and the Ramps can double as traction pads if I ever get the truck stuck somewhere. Will give me some options in the rear for mounting the AC and utilities. I won't even need the ramps when removing the dirtbike.. just will make it easier when loading.

Adding these to all 4 wheels on my CTC. It is a about the handling and these trailers have relatively poor suspensions and loaded down, they are worse. This should make a HUGE difference with sway, handling and etc., especially fully loaded with water tanks full and toys on board. Decided to do this now as I am headed out West late next week and it is a long haul from Florida fully loaded. The existing springs are almost flat and this will preload them and give me a little more travel. I am going to add these from the very start on my 6x12 build when I receive the trailer. I will have to move the axle to the other side of the springs (overslung) like I have already done on the 7x18. It will also lift the trailer which I want for off-road clearances.

I added something similar to the F250 before my SC trip and it was a very noticeable improvement for bounce and sway under load and hauling.

Are these just a rubber bump stop? Are the malleable with your hand type of soft?

Hollow in the center?

Could be a cool driving video with a go pro mounted under the trailer watching them do their thing

I will let you know when I receive them (just ordered from eTrailer today)... but they are progressive. If they are like the Timbren's on my truck, they are hollow. Not malleable by hand. Yes, they are like a rubber bumper stop.. but these are fully engaged (in contact) all the time with progressive resistance under load. They can reportedly compress 80% before the stop.

Hello Don,
Sounds like they are just rubber "helper springs". If so, I would expect them to behave much like Mousses in dirt bike tires. Stiff at first, then supple for a period of time, with eventual failure. Although that failure could be a decade from now. Being the engineer I know you to be, I'm surprised you don't have a remotely managed air suspension with monstrous air dump tanks and accelerometer controlled independent bag adjustment. :-)

Hi Clint.. lol thought about the air ride.. but too much $$ for the gain.

Correct on helper spring action. Yes, and they will eventually fail like everything, but then I will be no better or worse than now. Should help most when I am loaded.

How is your build going? I am starting on #3 in March or April whenever the factory calls to let me know the trailer is ready for pick up.This time I am keeping this one too.
