I don't have time to trim it out today, but I had a few hours before I head to the airport this morning and I was anxious to see the AC fit because I knew it would be tight.

Out with the old and in with the new:

Just need to trim this faceplate to fit.

Old vs new AC. Another bonus on this model is the filter comes out through the front. No more taking it out through the bathroom cabinet. The new AC is a slinger though. Going to need to mod that. I think they all are these days to push the EER rating up? I do have an idea that will allow me to use the sling mode in extreme hot and then I can just open the drain when I want to quiet it down or don't need the extra gain.. you know... those borderline days when the AC just doesn't need to work as hard.. I may try that... the slinging of water would bother me while I am trying to sleep at night, but during the day... probably not... too many other things going on to notice. The best of both world's I suppose..

So you installed the hard start too? When are you coming to Michigan ? You can go over my wiring and my AC needs. Bring your "old" and ideas for solar. Oh you can bring the orange too. Lots of people drank the orange kool aid here.

No I didn't install the Supco. I probably won't at this time. I was so surprised at how easily this GE unit compressor powered up on ECO mode. No noisy startup and the Generator just barely bumped up off idle. I am thinking the GE engineer's did a great job already with the startup circuit. Going to leave well enough alone in this case.

No plans for Michigan this year.... but while I am out drifting around next year... maybe.. If I can boondock in the driveway for a day or two. :D . Nothing wrong with Orange Koolaid.. good stuff.

I can accommodate more than one camper. Lots of trails in my area and I have kayaks for the rivers close by. I have lake access to Rose Lake, plus camp ground is close with boat launch. Aluminum boat with electric motor all available !

@ Padelin,
Boy, that sounds pretty good. I might like to get in on some of that. I've got all the tools and I'll fix yer AC no problem, as for solar... I can make ya some Sun Tea? No kool aide, that's just kid's stuff, but I'd put you on that Harley and take you down to Macinaw City for a drink or two. I know where to go from there.

Just sayin'...
;)

Hey Don,
I'm glad this swap is working out for you. There are lots of soft start compressors and controls these days. In fact I have watching my Mach closely since it has been so hot for so long. It seems that in the high cool mode, compressor off fan on, we're at about 175-200wt. When the thermostat closes it jumps to 500-550, then starts ramping up as the high side psi builds. About 800wts after 1-2min. and right at 1150wt after 5min. It's a little less on low cool, lower fan speed but not a lot of wattage diff. so I'd just as soon move that hot out of the comp/cond. ASAP.
I don't want to jinx ya, but... I have made a small fortune from GE 's QA...but then again I've been suspect of anything involving Jeffry Immelt for years. He is NOT what he appears to be....nuff said.

If I don't make it to Buffalo McDave, it is all your fault. This bucket of bolts and wires I am flying in has GE jet engines hanging on the wings. Darn it. LOL.

Yes, I am afraid gone are the days of the Maytag man. Nothing lasts forever.

I did not hook up any meters to see what it was doing at startup, but given the way it barely bumps the generator, they must have some sort of soft start for sure. Just happy it works like I needed it to.

No problem. That'll be the safest thing you've done all week. Besides, we're pretty good on the fly. Paper clip and a coffee cup, we can fix it. So, which Buffalo? Wyoming or South Dakota or North Dakota? Those big cities are a little scary, but at least you'll be close to Sturgis and not far from Cowtown. You'll be OK... ;)

The Powermate 2000i generator I just bought in econo mode would not start a new GE 8000 BTU AC unit. I had to start the AC unit in regular generator mode and then switch to econo mode.

I am now wondering if a Honda 2000 and/or Champion would have started the AC unit in econo mode.

Yes, The Honda did just fine... what GE Model# do you have. I have a 6000BTU Artic King that I cant stat in Econo Mode, but it will start this particular 8000BTU GE.

What is tripping? The Gen or the AC? On the 6000BTU, it was the AC tripping, not the gen.

Lookie
I got connections for riding around in these too.
My Ride was to hardware and to get ice cream. We traveled at the amazing speed of about 40 down hill on pavement. 25 mostly, it rides surprisingly nice on dirt roads. I impressed the owner with a couple bits of info on Henry Ford. I've known them since childhood, he just read of one this week! Image
If you can blow up the pic you'll see a couple in the garage. Not sure if the one in the yard shows up. But there is a barn with a few in it too.

flboy,

thank you for the reply.

The AC unit kicked off but the generator kept running.

Until I read your post, I incorrectly assumed that all 8,000 btu units would pull approx. the same amps at start up and kick off (I am new to AC units ... never having had one).

The AC was a 8,000 btu model AEZ08LV shown here https://www.walmart.com/ip/GE-8K-BTU-Wi ... /158998939

When I bought it, Walmart said I could return it if did not work out … so I did … and then ordered an 8,000 btu Haier shown here https://www.walmart.com/ip/Haier-HWE08X ... r/49368523

The only reason I returned the GE was because the weight was on the left side of the unit and I now know that I want the weight on the right side.

The Haier is supposed to arrive on Monday, July 31.

I originally posted that I did not intend to install an AC unit. I am now experimenting with the idea.

I am looking forward to hearing about how the performance of this new 8,000 btu unit compares to the 6,000 unit you took out.

I'll be firing it up after work sometime this week running from the generator to test it all out for my upcoming trip. I'll let you know how it goes. No reason not to expect better performance given the additional 2000 btu's however.

Just swapping it out to run from Eco mode, but I'll take the other positives as well. No doubt it will arrive at set temperatures quicker. :-)
