When the power, phone and cable go out, we still had access to important info that I would not have had otherwise. Still waiting on power I believe.

Don that antenna is AWESOME! Thanks again.

I surveyed the neighborhood on the KTM. Just an excuse to ride but I was able to work around the very few power lines easily.
You are welcome Tommy. I have an antenna like that on my house also as a backup when cable goes out. We lost cable and internet right at the peak of the storm. Having those local channels was nice. I was on with Emergency Operations Center info via Amateur Radio.. so that was good too. Had real time tornado and flooding reports.

Glad all is well. That storm was exhausting.

Don I am looking at this seriously. Watched a few good videos. I think I can use 10 breakers especially if I have to double up one or two for the pool pump maybe. But I have a generator that is 62500 watts continuous and 8500 surge. It seems to run all out no matter what's hooked up to it so I figure I can run a lot right?
Also got 100 feet of 10 4 wire in the cart and some conduit but I will not pull the trigger on this until I hear from you and I can call if you are not too busy.
We got power Friday night and that was a bad experience in many ways but we are ok now.
Another storm out there and I want to be ready if and when we lose power again for days.

Let me know your thoughts as it will take to Thursday to get the parts. I really think I can do this, it seems straight forward.

Thanks Don if you see this let me know or call. I don't want to bother you too much.

Padilen, hello girl. Hope you and your hooligan dog are well. :)

I love those lights and they are very reasonable. You know what's funny is when I hit my volume control on my TV, those LED lights pick up the signal and they start to flash. :? Same freq. I guess.

Very swank!
I got to move on this transfer box I think.

Tommy, give me a call sometime this week about the transfer switch.

If you want to come by I can show you what I did and some other options if you want to run pool pump and etc. Will be quick and easy and does not involve a transfer switch. Will need to see the gen manual also.

If Maria comes this way, I'll get your big gen wired in. Odds are very slim, so take a deep breath. :-)

I also have a TV mount for you.

Really? Geez Tommy, You guys are wearin' me plum out. We just had our first snowfall, but only about half the fires are out. But still, that seems like a really dangerous place to live.. just sayin'.. ;)
If I can help, just say the word.

Hey anybody, I want to run this 10 4 cord up into the attic and across that cotton like blow in insulation. I have been up there many times to run security camera cable so I know where to go. But this is large power cable. Do I need conduit or not. I can affix the cable to the trusses with the proper clamps some of the way. I plan on using metal conduit for any exposed wire on any wall, inside and out.

The wire is 0.8 inches in diam. and 100 feet long. Just Info.

I am going to do this for sure and Don I will ask a few questions along the way and will try and find time to pop in there. Thanks for the antenna mount in advance!

The hardest part will be running the cord to the back of the house I believe.

I also wonder if I will be able to run the dishwasher and dryer at all. Even by themselves? How about one small burner on the electric stove? Something about a clean sine wave for larger devices like the dryer? Anyway I am going ahead BUT I hope I never have to use it!

MCdave, SNOW?? omg its sweltering here when cleaning up debris. Glad to hear the fires are easing up a bit. No more losses I hope.

Sure Tommy. I don't know what is code on running that cord type through the attic like that. If it was Romex, I'd say okay since that is what they do already.

Make sure you know what you are doing and have power off on the house main breaker before you do anything inside your breaker panel. No quicker way to kill yourself than if you come in contact with that power rail when hot.

That is serious business. Also, 10ga wire is rated for 30 A. On a 6500 watt generator, assuming you have your loads balanced on both phases, you will be pushing the limits of those wires. Do not want any fires in your attic.

HMMM, OK Don. would be best and easier to keep 95% of the wire outside in conduit. Only portion of wire in the in the house will be from the transfer panel out to the side of the house. About 10 feet and that will be in conduit too. I will measure when I get home to estimate the total length of wire and conduit I need. If its under 100 feet I will go that way.

I do understand that both "legs" should be balanced in usage. A clamp on volt meter could help or I could pretty much guess with in reason. I would never run it all at once for sure and I may ask you to just check it out after I run the proper cord.

Will think this through and call reliance help line to verify that cord will work but it got staller reviews with 7500 watt gennies.

Open to advice! Maybe this elephant is to big for me to eat!

Just a thought... getting the correct sized wire (cable) to run direct through the attic may be less expensive than conduit, then you would not need to be as concerned about overloading. Maybe worth pricing before you decide. It is always good to be a little more robust than needed when it comes to wires and current draw.

At some point, the gage is bumped one or two units and it goes from copper to aluminum (cost per foot economy).. You will see that with your Air Conditioner wires for instance.

darn it, a problem. Those NEMA TWIST LOCK PLUGS.

Not for use with 8 gauge wire or 10 gauge with 600 volt insulation or higher.
Lucky I am not in a hurry.

Will research.

  Yes I called reliance help line and he said they all take 8-10 gauge. The one in there kit does. I just need the other end and it should be no problem. Just don't buy THAT one that stated that. I will get through this! Learning much again.
They also said yes 10 gauge would work but 8 gauge would be better. Like Don said.

I will come back when Im all done with this project.
