I will have to look, maybe heat one up and form it to my odd shape. For now it is going to get a 1/4" bolt thru it.

Unboxed my futon mattress tonight. I'm in the process of building the bed frame. Hopefully some pics in the next few days.

Nice! How many Ah each are those? AGM type? 6V or 12V?

You should have great results with those! Now you need some solar to keep them charged! ;-)

I bought a WF 8740 before I learned all you guys prefer the Progressive Dynamics. I'll cross my fingers and hope it hangs with me.

40A, that'll do.

My preferred charger is Sterling ProCharge Ultra and ProMariner Pronautic P for custom setpoints

Iconofabul8,

Many battery manufactures publish the optimum charge parameters for their batteries (the differences between batteries is sometimes quite significant). To my knowledge, Duracell does not publish the optimum charge rates for your batteries.

Your WF-8740 controller outputs 13.2 VDC “float” mode, 13.6 VDC “absorption” charge mode, and a 14.4 VDC “bulk” charge mode. I suspect that these charge rates are close to optimum charge rates for your battery. My Bogart charge controller can be programmed to match any battery charge parameter; but the manufactures' parameters must be known to do so.

FYI, I do not believe there is any shore power charger made that properly charges deep cycle batteries. For example, the Battery Tender web page expressly states that their chargers are not made for deep cycle batteries. Consequently, a solar charger such as yours is the only way I know of to properly charge a deep cycle battery.

Some of the better MPPT solar charge controllers will accommodate custom charge parameters also. At the end of the day, I think what you have is good enough.

Optimum is nice, but sometimes optimum and good enough really are not discernable to the average user not pushing the batteries to the limits or claiming marketing specifications.

Its kinda like the audio specs you can't discern with your own ears, but need complex measuring equipment to differentiate. Guys will argue for days over which is better. I say play the music. ;-)

Deka does:

The recommendations from East Penn, for that battery, in a cycling / off-grid application are.
(Note: floats are higher in off-grid than typical golf cart use).

At 12V:

Max Charge Current = 30% or less of Ah capacity (20 hour)

Absorption Voltage = 14.4V - 14.7V
Absorption End Point = Current change over 1 hour period of less than 0.1A
Max Absorption Time = 12 Hours

Float Voltage = 13.8V - 14.1V
Float End Time = No Limit

Equalization = 15.0V to 15.3V
Equalization End Point = Current change over 1 hour period of less than 0.1A
Max Equalization Time = 12 Hours

Temp Compensation = -.018V for every degree °C rise above 25C

Note:

For dock charging you may want to compensate float down to 13.4V to 13.6V
the guidance above is for off-grid or deep cycling applications where the batteries are cycled daily.

Stick to the 14.7V end of the absorption range and the batteries will do much better if they are cycled
