Good looking setup, fast work putting it together! Looks like it's gonna be fun, which means it's gonna get used a lot

Now....

Got some more accomplished today, water test was succesful with no leaks, water heater worked great, outside shower worked great. Couter tops installed along with sink and rest of cabinet doors. Its coming along nicely. Next will be finish painting the rest of the trailer and install my flooring. Kitchen area will be vinyl plank and rear will either be rhino lined or just garage floor paint.ImageImageImageImage

I'm single and I'm not much for crowded camp grounds so I'm looking for a 16' X 8.5' featherlite and put a 4" lift on it. I like colorado but not the crowds

Problem with 16' is most of them are only 7' or less wide with fendered wheels on the outside. Why anyone would want fendered trailer wheels? Cheaper to build I guess.

There are a few things I considered on the 7ft. wide vs. the 8 or 8.5 ft. wide.

1) Forward Wind Profile... Just less surface area to pull through the air. Not sure how much difference it makes overall since I don't have something to compare with, but every little bit adds up. I was trying to keep at least the sides in the truck's "air envelope" as much as possible. Aside from efficiency... it is huge for bug cleanup in Florida. :-)

2) Less width for branches and etc. to scratch down the sides. If my Mirrors clear it, typically the trailer will .

3) Rear Visibility when towing.. it helps.

4) I liked the looks better and with my intended floor plan design.. most of the extra width would have been aisle space (nice, but not necessary).. Less area, less to cool.

Those are my main reason's. I am sure the extra width would cost more.

Anyone know that, if you get the extra width, that the licensing (weight class) and etc. changes.. I have noticed that sometimes builders will put 1,900 lbs. weight on the sticker for various similar lengths... but I didn't see that on the wider versions? I found that odd as my original 14" CTC and this 18" CTC had the same weight on the sticker. And if you looked around, they were very careful not to get to 2,000 lbs. unless it was just obvious... is it just rounding of numbers or is there something a 2,000 lbs trailer weight triggers?

8.5 x 24 toy hauler...first build

Postby Padilen » Mon May 29, 2017 12:58 pm

As Don has said width and height more wind resistance. Fenders to not intrude inside, changing flats easier.
Custom order size and style you want. Why do a 4" lift when you can order with a straight axle & over or under slung.
My CTC is 7x12 toy hauler plenty of room for me and dog. But mines a camper not an RV.

I understand some vehicles don't have extendable mirrors or the power to pull a 8' wide trailer, but I already have a tow vehicle capable of that. It pulled my old 24' featherlite toyhauler 4"lift with ease at 15 mpg. 75 mph 14000# gross

My thinking says if the outside wheel to wheel distance is around 8.5' .. Why build the trailer much narrower? Your already rolling over 8.5' of ground, might as well take advantage of that 8.5' I cant agree with your reasons Padilen. Who cares if the wheel wells intrude in when you just increased trailer width 1 1/2 feet? My wheel wells had fold up couch beds over them.

I never buy new, or I would have already bought another featherlite 4926 0016

Agree with my reasoning? I'm only saying what's been said. Narrow pulls easier with less wind resistance. And why have a 6-7 wide with wheel boxes intruding on space? Not everyone wants couches or boxes over them. Not everyone has max towing capacity. They make them different because we are different and have different needs. I called Dexter and American Hauler to ask why drop axles not straight. I was told that the majority of buyers want lower floors. The minority want ground clearance. So they produce what sells on dealer lots and custom build for the minority. Agree or disagree but not with me.
My thinking is you should buy what you want. And if it's not available used, buy new.

@rebar, You asked why would anybody want to. Those are some reasons folks may want to for their needs/desires. That is why there are 33 flavors at Bressler's Ice Cream. :-) Pick your favorite and enjoy.

I'm thinking that is based on axle rating. Same axle for varied lengths = same weight on sticker?
