8.5 x 24 toy hauler...first build

Postby colt45 » Mon May 22, 2017 4:30 pm

Hey guys, ive been creeping around the forum for awhile now. Ordered a 8.5x24 with the following options.

5200lb axles
2 30x30 windows
2 roof vents
Wired 110 with 2 lights and 6 outlets
Insulated
32" rv door with screen

Since we custom ordered we were able to place everything where we wanted it. Ended up with one window on each side and one in door. Placed outlets according to plan.

We were able to start on it yesterday and got quite a bit done.

Will updated as we go.ImageImageImage

I like it.. And looks like I'm not the only one on this forum who wants a toyhauler.

I had a 24' featherlite surv toyhauler, but it was to big to take up the mountain.

Good luck with your build..

Looks good so far. Sometimes I wonder if I should have bought a bigger trailer, but the size looked too big for me. How high are your walls? 8 Feet?

Look forward to seeing how you design and build this one. I'm right behind you and should be starting next month.

I was going to go with a 20 footer but need to haul a side by side and 2 wheelers, add in the wide and 3 kids and 24' gets small fast. Glad i didnt go bigger tho.

Not sure on wall height, door opening is 84". I wanted it tall as me and wife are 6'2". Also no issues with fitting the side by side that way.

Yeah, if the door is 84" then it probably is 8 feet. Like a small apartment in there.

I thought I heard someone creeping around in here. you are pretty quiet for a big guy with a big trailer.... :o ...
So hey colt45, you must somewhere near Big Sky country to be gettin' 37f on a May morning. Kinda warm for us this year.
Well, I guess you'll have that all knocked out by end of the week, so where ya headed first? That's a big ol' trailer so I reckon you have room for me and the Harley to tag along. I'll bring some snacks.

Little east of Big sky country, but it still gets cold in the Dakotas! First trip is 4th of july weekend 4 wheeling in the Black Hills. Always a good time! I dont think it will be ready by the weekend...still a long ways to go but looking forward to the finished product.

Nice work. I will be watching with interest as I just picked up my trailer with the same goal in mind.

I also special ordered my trailer to get the basic starting point exactly as I wanted it. It was well worth the wait. One of my main concerns was the height of the wheel well boxes on the inside as I have 2 cars with the bottom of the doors only 10" off the ground. I was able to order my trailer with the axles 2" lower relative to the frame which yielded 8" tall boxes inside. I also ordered a 2' longer box(26'), upgrade 6" tall frame & cross members to 8", reduced the side door from 48" to RV size and moved it forward to 32" from the front corner of the box. These changes were at little or no cost compared to the std. trailer. My salesman suggested ordering it in "Champagne" instead of white or black and I am very happy that I took him up on that.

As a side note my salesman, noting my address, said that he lived about 10 houses down the block from me back in the 1950's when we were both young kids. His aunt/uncle lived 5 houses from me and I grew up with his cousins. Small world.
