Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

6x12 build

Postby fourbtgait » Sat Jul 08, 2017 10:53 am

Good morning.
Having successfully done a Benroy TD build, we are going to do a CTC for more floor space and ability to stand up. Sucks getting old at times.
Preliminary questions:
I have read almost all build journals, used the search function, but...
1. For those that install onboard water tanks, has anyone bought a thin tank, installed it under the deck just in front of the axles?
2. We would prefer a rear kitchen as in the Benroy, those that have, how did you offset the weight?
I knew when we did the Benroy that I could not balance the kitchen weight per a typical TD because of the trailer limitations. So during travel the 7 gallon water jug and the ice chest rode in the front of the compartment which worked well.
This will be a slow build, camping in it while deciding on best layouts. We are not set in stone yet on rear kitchen, but they are so nice, keep smells out of the trailer. Plus the rear cardo doors lend themselves to each having a fold up counter with storage above, in addition to the built in kitchen.
Water tank/pump, water heater, outside shower/toilet tent.
Thank you for your thoughts.

No generators nor ac.
If you carry all your water upfront you run the risk of to heavy a tongue, plus after you empty the water you are to light.
It is not my first trailer. Ive owned from flatbed goosenecks, stock trailers, 5th wherls, travel trailers. 6x12 cargo is simply my 2nd smallest trailer. Oh, Ive also built goosenecks and flatbeds for trucks.

But that is still a good answer to the problem you're creating by putting all the other weight all the way to the rear. Focus first on making the kitchen as light as possible.

Or maybe have a chuckbox with the heavier pots etc, able to relocate forward when water is low. Carry your grey water rather than dump it. Or make a box to fill with ballast when needed, many way to skin a cat.

I built a 4x8 benroy and after 2 years traded it for a 6x12 cargo for the same reasons. We have barn doors rear and galley in back. I will shoot some pics tomorrow. Rigid polyiso Insulation and squirting low expansion foam into tube steel framing was a bigger deal to me than weight worries. Don't use cheap paneling for ceiling and walls unless you want to replace after 2 years like I am. Have fun with your build and get camping! We are still members of the TN tearjerkers even though we are CTC campers now btw

Sorry, but in my mind its not good enough. That is why my first question was of putting the water tank under the trailer out of curiosity, in front of the axle. Frees up room inside from putting the water tank under the bed if you wanted a murphy bed or such. It is better to have a static weight in the nose instead of a variable weight. Already planned on spare tire, propane, battery on the hitch a frame. Then with a nose cabinet that carries down low weight of chairs, table, shower tent, you end up with more static weight. Chuck box, I might as well move the ice chest from rear to front as I did in the TD, again not worth it. Ballast box? No. Grey water? Maybe, but that tank would then go under the trailer, same question I had of water tanks......
The kitchen area will be built light weight. Ive also built/rebuilt boats. I see some builds and say wow, that is so overbuilt. Why use 3/4 when 1/2 works or even 1/4 properly stiffened works.
The main weight in a kitchen should not be the build, but the weight of what you carry. My main load would be a full ice chest, not plates, pots utensils, stove.

Mine will be easy to squirt foam into wall studs, roof bows, just a pain. 1 1/2-2" will fit in roof, 1" in walls. And..... my wall ply is screwed on, not cheesy nails. So i can pull the sheathing, insulate it, camp and decide later after use of windows, lights, etc.
Cheap ply or paneling even falls apart in a house when not subjected to so many vaiables. We are a long way off from deciding on paneling.

Sundays work.
$300 worth of iso insulation.80% completed today. Took interior ply off, insulated, replaced ply. Big help in that wall ply was screwed on. No, I have not foamed the nose, roof ribs or door channels yet. I am waiting till final decision on windows, locations, lights, cabinets, water heater/tank, etc. but for now doing the majority helps for summer camping.
Walls are R6, roof will be R9.
Looking at putting a window in the rv door, insulate it if its not.
Will post the Benroy on CL this week, sell it for cost. With or without trailer, their call.

Typical, I cannot blame them. 17" wide, cut ply 16". Otherwise you waste money.
Probably put 1/4" birch beadboard over it.

Any specific advice on opening the rear cargo doors and the rv door to add insulation?
