We have the Igloo version from wallyworld and love it! Had it now for several years and it has traveled all over the country. It makes a lot of ice, fast. Like a set every 6 minutes on average. On our last trip, in 90 degree-high humidity, the ice was not real hard, but we still were able to fill our ice chest in about 18 hours. This thing gets noisy, but you just whack it on the side and it quits making what I call the "death noise". It more than paid for itself the first year we used it.

I am just wanting the ice for drinks and etc.. I'd be using it inside the RV which is not as hot or humid as outside. Should be good enough for that I'd think. So I've heard twice that the Igloo from Wal-Mart was decent for the money? Maybe I'll try that.

So the weather is not going to cooperate for motorcycle riding today. May take the pickup out today. Need to run into a town somewhere for a few provisions. If I can find a Wal-Mart, I will pick an Igloo up and try it for the remainder of the trip. If it does not work well, I will return it to Wal-Mart at home. Worth a shot. If it works well, I have a spot for it in my cabinet. Thanks.

Have a cheap one from Sam's club. It's better than nothing. You must empty it about every hour. If you're willing to babysit and empty every hour, we can get about 3 gallon zip lock bags a day out of it. The ice is small/hollow and melts extremely fast. We unplugged ours after 2 weeks because it's easier and quieter to go buy a bag of ice.

Also keep in mind it produces quite a bit of heat inside the RV.

No, they quit carrying them in store after summer. Just missed them. I will order one online after this trip.

Just ordered an Igloo for $89.00 (+tax). I will receive it Friday and test is out and write a review. Longevity is always the issue with these things.

In any case, I am going to Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach with the CTC for 3 days in October and camping in ONF the end of September and I'll have a chance to try it out.

I know the picture says RCA and the Amazon webpage says Igloo.. probably don't matter as almost all these come from the same licensed manufacturer.. The User Manual I downloaded seems to indicate these are made by Haeir.

I went ahead and bought one of these and I am happy with the way it works, on one hand it pretty much does what you want and makes ice pretty fast but on the other hand you have to empty the tray for it to keep making ice.
I see it wasn't designed to make a lot of ice but enough that you would not have to open the ice chest every time you wanted ice for a drink.
it does make some noise and has a fan that runs a lot especially when it empties the ice into the tray. I have only used it in my house not in my trailer.
probably worth the money considering I will use it for both.

Fair review. I am sorry I have not followed up on my earlier commitment to get mine out of the trailer and report on usage results. But I think others have joined in to show that if your expectations are reasonable, these are useful tools/appliances.

I'll test mine out.. in a few days. I read reviews that complained of out of box failures and etc.. The online manual I read recommends that you let it set for 24 hours on a level surface to be sure the compressor oil and etc. settles back in. When shipped, you have no idea if the are shipped upright or on their sides. I know that will reduce the life of the compressor if nothing else. I wonder how many people receive them then immediately unbox them and turn them on to make ice?

I did. Brought it home from WM and used it. Maybe I have been lucky so far.

In theory, they would be displayed in the upright position at wally world, and unless there was a run on them probably more than 24hrs. Hopefully the compressor oil would be sitting in the compressor and not the evap. or cap tube. But it's doubtful UPS or FEDEX could maintain the "This End Up" attitude throughout the shipping process.
