Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

It’s a small world

Postby ris » Sat Jul 14, 2018 8:53 pm

Thanks for responding to our last post. That was a scary few moments.
So the other day we pull up to the Acadia National Park campground in Maine. We ask if they have any rv sites left for 4 nights. They say no but they have a site available for 2 nights. We say great. We drive in to the campground and the site right before ours has a 7ft X 14 ft Vnose cargo trailer, gray, 2 windows and a maxxair fan on the roof and from Florida. Turns out it is a couple from Okeechobee Fl. About 90 minute drive south of our home in Frostproof Fl. They have a much larger RV trailer but fixed up this cargo trailer and have traveled all over out west in it. They said it is just much easier to move and find space for in some of the parks. They only travel during the summer when school is out. After traveling in theirs for 3 summers they are thinking of getting a larger one as they have a better idea of what they want in their next trailer.
Today as we traveled around Acadia, we went to Sandy Beach one of the few beaches in Maine that is not pebbles but sandy like Florida beaches and we run into a couple from Immokalee Fl. We only talked to 2 people on the beach and they were the 2nd couple we talked to at the beach. It is a small world.

ris, Howdy;

You are (and experiencing) reverse Snowbirding.
Mainers go South for the Winter and y'all go North in the Summer.

After 7573 miles of travel from Florida to Maine coast to New York up to Saint Lawrence, back down to the Adirondack mountains across to Ohio then Illinois, up to Wisconsin Northwoods then over to Minnesota up to Lake superior. We are now going across North Dakota to Theodore Roosevelt national Park. Trailer is working out just fine we have had a flat tire and the opening mechanism on the max air fan has ceased to function. We can open manually and the remote turns the fan on off and changes The fan speeds. The Sterling power battery to battery charger is working very well. We Will be going to South Dakota when we leave North Dakota. If we come near any of you and you would like to meet up for a brewski just let me know.

Hey ris,
What an epic adventure you have had already in just a few months. That's more mileage than I have put on my trailer in
the last two years combined! It is awesome to really utilize and enjoy something you have planned and built yourself. Something to be proud of for sure.
My trips to the Dakotas are probably done for this season as winter is on the way and there is a ton of things to wrap up here to get ready. However, if you wander into S.E. Montana by chance I'm in Cowtown,(Miles City) approx. 200mi. from the borders of NoDak, SoDak, and Wyoming. I could surely take a day trip in that direction if you wanted to meet somewhere near the border(s). If you are already up here you really should try to see the real west. Montana, Wyoming and Idaho and the Dakotas are really the last wild and free places in the USA. Like I said, winter is on the way so keep that in mind. It could happen anytime now and could be brutal if you haven't experienced one up here before. Then again, it could hold out till Oct. before the snow flies. But best to be prepared at all times. I check in here regularly so I should get the message in a day or so.

Hey Richard,
Yup, Big Sky RV is just a few miles from us on Hwy 12, the old Baker hwy. The park is just off the interstate I-94 maybe 1/4 to 1/2 mile.
Couple things, You are surely welcome to stay with us. You can plug in here and stay as long as you like, we have guest rooms and anything you need. Also, I haven't been to the Big Sky in years, decades really but it is a nice spot just out of town. We also have a beautiful KOA at the west end of town that sits near the confluence of the Yellowstone river and Tongue river. Lots of trees, not far from Downtown. It is usually a little busier but everything is starting to slow down as far as campgrounds. Looks like you picked a great time to be up here as we are having an Indian Summer so far.
There is an amazing little museum just west of downtown called the Range Riders Museum. It is just filled with old west artefacts mostly donated by locals and gives you a taste of what life was really like when Gen. Custer and his boys were running around up here. Also, a really nice Art Gallery built in the old water pumping plant on the Yellowstone. I'm not sure of the hours of either of those, but there are also lots of bars and casinos and churches, and we have a WalMart now!
I think we have the biggest Ace Hardware in America and a Murdochs Farm and Ranch, and a NAPA, so you can probably find anything you might need.
Hope you can make it, if so we can set up a rendezvous and I am free to meet you almost anytime. Just let me know.

McDave

PS, Watch out for deer especially at dusk and dawn. There are lots of them and they go down to the rivers and wheat and corn fields at dusk and back home at dawn, and they are BIG.

We made it over to Montana from North Dakota to visit Dave and his wife. Right to Left Dave, Richards wife, Richard, Daves' wife. They were great hosts and it was nice to meet Dave and check out his trailer. We had a wonderful time visiting with them. Both our wives were a little leery about visiting people their husbands knew only from the net. But they both had a great time as did Dave and I.

Don here are a few pics of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. For someone from Florida this was a great park. Saw lots of Bison, 1 Bull elk, heard Elk bugle for the first time, some large Mule Deer, and a lot of pheasant and other birds. The scenery is simply stunning for someone who has never been out west.

Went to the john and came back and had to wait for this big guy to amble on before I could get to our trailer. This was in the park campsite.

We are heading down to the parks around Rapid City South Dakota on Thursday for about a week. Mt. Rushmore, Badlands National Park, Black Hills Park and what ever else is in the area. We might be there for longer than a week. Any one in the area who would like to meet up with us send us a PM. Or post here.

I am curious how you framed in the dividing walls and how these are attached.

Normal 2x4 framing with ply sheeting and then attached via screws to the aluminum studs 16" OC? I am planning to put up a full wall separating the "garage" area rear part of trailer from the living quarters up front.

My adventure I put the wall where I could screw it to the side metal studs. It was built in two pieces going across the trailer look close at the bare stud wall and you can see where to 2 x 4‘s are nailed together to join the two sections of wall there are pictures on page 2 and three of this build. The bottom of the wall was screwed to the floor plywood. the top of the wall was screwed to the 1 X 2’s that run front to back on the trailer ceiling. This is on page 2 of the build. Hope this helps .
