6x14 Window Placement Question

Postby MrBo » Fri Jan 05, 2018 4:52 pm

Hello All,

Thanks for any help in advance. Was planing on building a teardrop but after looking at one decided it was too small for our use. So I have decided to do a 6x14 custom cargo conversion with barn doors. Seems to be the only way I can get the space and still be able to pull it with SUV 2005 Santa fe. Rated at 2700 - 3300lbs. Trailer comes in at about 1600lbs. plan on getting it with brakes and adding 4 windows.

I want to add 4 windows, 15x24 in the door. 30x30 left of side door. and 2) 18x48 one on each side somewhere above the wheel wells. Plan on putting a galley and door behind the barn doors in the back. So I need to figure out how may feet from wheels to the back. And how many feet from side door to wheels. Hope this isn't a stupid question and forgive me if it is  .

Need to do a sketch for the factory.

Thanks for any insight.

Excited to do this and will start a build thread once I get going.

Can anyone point me to the easy easy way to make a sketch for window and doors placement. I have tried all night trying to figure out the cad programs and I just don't have time to spend a week learning some new software. Just need to make a wall 165" long and 6'3" high and add a door and two windows to scale. This seems like it should be so easy but I can not figure it out.

OK, tell me where to locate everything. The trailer and windows should all be to scale. I made the door 3 X 5 1/2,
My 6 X 12 has the axle 8' from the front of the trailer box, that is where this is, but we can move or adjust whatever wherever you want.

I'll make a W.A.G. on the axle at 55" from the rear or 110" from the front.

Howdy All;

My reckoning puts axle at pivot point for a 60/40 weight distribution or
99" from front of box and 66" from rear of box. That's my W.A.G. .

YOU ARE AWESOME! :applause:  I have tried 5 programs and cannot get anything to scale or work. Driving me crazy something so simple is so hard.

MY plan is to put a kitchen in the front vnose. Wanted to get the extended tongue but for some reason that will not work so for that I would have to go with a flat front. Not a fan of that. The only reason for extended tongue is for propane. So now I am thinking vnose and mounting propane to vnose. Found some brackets that would work.

FYI. The inside length is 13’9” or 165” The side door is 32” wide. Height 6’ 3”. 5' 9" wide. The walls are 16”oc ( if that matters) .

In the back behind the barn doors I want to put a 4’ (or less) small galley across for grill and cooking from the back. The other two feet across, a door next to that behind the barn doors if that makes sense. Have not figured the exact sizing. I want this back unit to act as storage, outside kitchen, and counter that will be able to open from the inside as well to be used as counter and work station.

So I need about 2 1/2 to 3’ of side wall space starting from the back. This is why I wanted the 14’.

A full size bed will go across from side to side. Hoping I can get a foot space between the bed and back unit. This will allow exit from the bed from the back and front. My wife and I are both short so that will work for us.

The Window sizes ( installed at the factory) I was planning on using are 1) 15x24” vertical in the 32” side door. 1) 30x30” left of the side door. Would like to have a 1 ½ to 2’ from door to window so If I want to put a small light cabinet top to bottom for shoes, storage and such. Then some space and 1) 18x42 horizontal by the bed one on each side, driver and passenger .

So crunching numbers I don’t think that the 18x42” will work because they are too long. And will not leave enough space on the back part of the side wall. So the other option is to change to 2) 15x24” mounted horizontal . Or use two more 30x30” windows.

The other kicker is height placement. I want to leave the top part of the wall open to put a long small light cabinets across the top side walls on both sides. 1 ½ to 2’.

I notice a lot of cargo trailer put the windows high up. Probably for security, ventilation and light.

For me being a professional photographer I need to see outside and whats coming at me :D so height somewhat normal I guess.

Have a lot of this planned out in my mind and a little bit on paper , but not to scale and will have to wait till I pick up and start to see what will work. :?

Thanks again for any insights. Hope this all makes a little sense.

Been banging my head for a few days trying to figure this out. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to all for the help.

Ok, added a 2' V nose, 18" bulkhead, and 2' between window and door. I set the window height on the 30x30 the same as the door window (around 66"). Not sure where to put the other window heights if you go with one of those.

Image

I forgot about the rear space requirement. Maybe more like this? The two big windows would look really good.

Thank you! thank you! thank you! For taking the time to do this. Looks great. My only thought would be is there enough room to put a long small cabinets above the side windows? I will save the images and see if I can do anything... again THANK YOU!

Is there any way to download a larger image. When I save the images they are small to see the top space?

I am wondering if 3 feet from the floor to the bottom of the window would be good on the 30x30 the others centered with the height of the 30 x30 maybe ... just thinking out loud...

Just checking looks like if it is 66" to the top of the 30x30 that is about 3 feet from the floor to the bottom of the window right ? Then that would be perfect. My eyes are not that great to see the details on the small graphic. Would it be possible to buy the cad file from you if I can open it on one of the free programs.

Thanks for all you do!

MrBo, Howdy;

Use Ctrl and tap on the + tab at the same time poof, gets bigger.
Likewise Ctrl and - and it reduces ...

I figured after we zeroed in on just what you wanted, I could then get you a printable copy or whatever format you want, because I have to shrink these a lot to display on the forum.
