Awning question?

I have an awning question for the group. I have a 16’ awning that come off a donor camper. The problem I have is my trailer is 14’. Is it possible to cut the tube/center/guts of the awning down and put a new canopy on it.

Has anyone ever cut one down?

All the springs and clutches for the roll up are in the ends. If you cut 2ft or etc. out of the middle it may work, but you would need a way to firmly join the two pieces back together and maintain the channels for the tarp and etc.. would need a pipe that could snugly fit inside so both pieces can slide over and then a few countersunk screws to hold it in place.

My awning came in 3 or 4 pieces that fit together like that, but they were designed for that with countersunk screws and etc.. It was to faciltate shipping in boxes not too long.

I cut mine down! I removed both end caps and springs. First you have to unwind the springs. Remember to count the turns. There are you tube videos on how to replace springs I watched those to help me. Then I reinstalled springs and end caps.
You do not cut the tube to exactly the same as awning fabric.

Perfect.. Not sure why my brain was not working that way. If you can remove one end and cut just from the end... I was just thinking how my Aleko awning came in pieces.

I removed both to check on condition. Mine was off my mom's TT, that had a lot of use. It also made it easier to hold flat while cutting.

Nice job! Looks like you answered the question... It can be done,, and if that is the case, if the Tarp/Canopy is in satisfactory shape... why not cut it down also?

The cut edge is usually seamed,& sewn. Not sure if it's mandatory, or how hard it would be to do. Perhaps a glue, then boards and clamps. Or a cobler.

Probably would be a good idea. Maybe cheaper than a new canopy.

Howdy All;

Look for an awning shop in the yellow pages, should have a medium/heavy duty sewing machine
or have someone they use to do the stitching for them. Folks that do boat covers have the right
machines too as do upholsterers. Just throwin' a few suggestions for stones to turn in your hunt
for the stitch-in-time.
edit; Almost forgot parachute riggers have the same machines as do sail makers.

My awning also had the roller in 2 pieces, 10' x 8' awning. They had a splice that was contoured to slide inside the roller and the screws were in a groove to prevent contact with the material.
I also have a floating cover (very heavy bubble wrap) for my swimming pool 18' x 33' , that is on a reel so 1 person can deploy or retract. It has a very similar aluminium roller and was shipped in (3) 6' pieces with the splices.
Is there a splice in your roller @ 8' maybe? 16' is a lot move around in factories and warehouses.
