Thanks Hank. My main desire when I began this journey is to have a fold out which is hard sided, as a matter of fact my original design http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=70592 which was much more compact relied heavily on fold outs for space.

Perhaps I a bit of a cynic , perhaps it's from working on aircraft , helicopters more
specifically , but I'm of the opinion that the fewer moving parts the less there is to
go wrong .

That said, still looking forward to your build.

I finally made a trip to my local metal supplier on Friday to check out options but nothing sparked my imagination

Saturday I finally had a breakthrough moment on just how I was going to make strong weatherproof connections between the roof and floor!

While I was shopping at Lowes yesterday I came across these, it's a piece of 1/4" X 1" aluminum extrusion and what was labeled as "1/4" plywood trim".
The two fit together with a slight bit of clearance which I had been hoping to find.

Perfect!


I also found this as an alternative, it's a piece of lattice channel from the deck section.

Now to figure out which way would be best to attach the .25 X 1 extrusion to the panels

I could surface mount it

the benefit of this is simplicity and gaining a huge drip lip. The downside is there will be cross shear on the screws used to attach it.


On the other hand I could dado out a groove in the panel to insert the extrusion

which "might" be sturdier

I think so to rebar! this has been my goal since day one when I began planning.

My main concern with soft sides was the lack of security and inclement weather,

On our last two tent camping trips we had to:
1. erect our tent in a full on down pour
2. we came back to completely soaked camping gear due to a freak thunderstorm blowing rain sideways and up and over our rainfly

And the security thing? well, a friend of mine came by one day to show of his hybrid camper which had soft side popouts. He demonstrated how it was set up and as I watched him fold out the beds and VELCRO down the sides I asked "what's to stop someone from just peeling up the velcro and helping themselves to your laptop sitting on the bed?" he got a serious look and said "not a damn thing".

Not that I think the places we have or will visit are rampant with crime I'm just helping keep folks honest

Yeah you never know.. I read a situation where a group was camping far away from anyone. I know the spot and would have never guessed thieves would stake it out. The thieves crept into their campsite middle of the night and rolled their motorcycles down the mountain, never to be seen again.. Ouch

As far as the hard sides.. As long as the water is shed away, should work great..

I haven't been slack during my quietness

I did finally get the remainder of the cabinet doors on and trimmed out the bathroom, I do still need to make the shower pan and get it plumbed.

And this little bugger is what has been causing me a lot of grief if I just wasn't so concerned with keeping those lift cables (my wife wouldn't be able to fold it out on her own) I'd have gotten rid of them.

Could you retrofit your ramp hinge with ramp springs and eliminate the need for the overhead spring?

I don't believe so aggie79, the type of hinge on my ramp is a weld on bullet style i.e. no bar to place that spring around.

I've been working hard this Saturday and Sunday because we are booked to be camping labor day weekend! So you may or may not see some furious building depending on whether I have time to post

Ok. To start I'm building the roof first as all other measurements are predicated off it.

It consists of
1x4 white pine framing
3/16 exterior plywood for the outer skin
3/4 thick reflective foam board insulation
1/16 thick plastic skin for the underside.

You can see in these shots I'm doweling the joints together, it might be overkill but I figure this is going to be flexed a lot with the raising and lowering and what the heck, it couldn't hurt.
