AC Mounting Idea

Postby jwh92020 » Mon Oct 22, 2018 6:04 pm

I'm going to use a 5000 btu window ac in my 6 x 12 CTC. I had an idea of building a wall 1 ft in from the rear doors and mounting the unit in it (and using the space as storage for the spare, hoses, cords, camping chairs, etc). Unlike a lot of you, I don't want to have the doors open when using the ac. I want o do a cut out in the secondary door (the one that opens second). I would build a sealed box to enclose the entire back of the ac and make a duct to isolate the exhaust air out through the door opening. To bring fresh air into the ac unit, I was thinking of mounting a crank vent over the box, covering that with an all weather vent cover, leaving the crank vent open permanently. Does this sound doable? As I said, I don't want to have to leave the rear doors open for the ac, and no offense to anyone, but I don't like the look of an ac unit hanging outside a trailer. Not to mention, there are parks that won't allow a trailer in with a window ac showing, but I've always had mine hidden and never had an issue. Here is a really bad drawing of my idea.

jwh92020, I replied to the PM. Good luck with your build. I think what you have drawn will work assuming the exhaust is isolated and goes directly out the back. That would draw air through the vent assuming that is the only opening.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The exhaust will be isolated via a duct of 1" foam board.

I wouldn't duct the intake air. I would just put a screened vent or two in the floor and let it pull air from the whole storage space.

I think he is just ducting the exhaust. A floor vent would also work, just don't pull the trailer down any dirt roads without a complete cover and seal over the floor vent.

Ask me how I know that. Lol!

Iconfabul8 - I'm planning on ducting the exhaust straight out the back thru the door. I had planned on bringing fresh air thru a roof vent, but if bringing it in thru the gargae area works, that beats putting another hole in the roof. A couple of well placed screened holes would allow enough air to be pulled in for the ac to perform correctly.

Would these work to bring fresh air into the garage area for the ac?

We had this conversation not too long ago in Pig Trail's build. Here is a link, the discussion is toward the bottom of the post:

I personally think you will need to come close to matching the square inches of the slits in the A/C housing.

Icon- Thanks for the link. I think I'm going to use a vent the same size as the exhaust vent for intake.I'll mount it on the driver side at the same height ss the ac. Air in & out, no hole in roof.
