"Rural Route Getaway"- 24' CTC Build

Postby Carolina_coast99 » Fri Sep 13, 2019 9:38 am

Hello all.
Like many others; I have read and read- trying to gather as much information as possible on this site (and others) for a while now, asking a question here and there in preparation for my upcoming build. Thanks to all who contribute to this great site!
About six weeks ago, I ordered a custom build cargo trailer. <It took me 2 years to decide on the size and manufacturer-haha.> I ended up going with a company called Double R out of Nampa Idaho and it is their "All-Sport" model. My intentions for the trailer are to use it for both business and pleasure. I will potentially be working up to 5 or 6 weeks at a time across the country- multiple times a year; and also hope to use it at the beach or on mountain vacations.
I should take delivery of it in about a week and hopefully that is when the fun begins!

The Trailer specs are as follows:
o 24'L x 7.5'W x 7.5'T flat nose plus 5' tongue
(it is a standard width axle, but I made the body more narrow by 8" in order to give some maneuverability and better viewing range- hopefully….)
o Rear ramp door
o 36" side door with screen with double hasp on bar lock
o 24" diamond plate on sides and rear; with 36" on nose
o Requested to only install half of the interior wall fasteners and bag the rest, requested no silicone on interior walls and no seam strips of plywood
o (2) 24"x20" slider windows with screen and requested the following " Install a square piece of 1/4" plywood in the window area that is 2" larger on each side than the window so customer can install his own wall liner without removing our window clamp ring." I really did not want to be installing my own windows- haha
o No "D" rings. In lieu of these; I had (4) Aluminum bolted in horse trailer tie rings installed on the outer walls ((2) on each side), to tie clotheslines and such
o No roof vents. No holes in roof at all! In lieu of these I had 1 set of air flow vents installed. These were supposed to be both at the rear of the trailer- on either side- where my 3' "cargo/garage" area is to be; but I see by a picture sent to me by the manufacturer that one was installed incorrectly at the front of the trailer…. Oh well. :(
o Spare tire package. Installed on the nose- up high (giving clearance for where the HVAC unit will go)
o 10ply tire- 16"- 8 lug wheels (the cheap Chinese tires will be gone- as soon as I have money to replace with LT tires- after my build)
o 7k# straight axles on leaf springs
o Rear roller guards
o Automotive undercoating
o 2" receiver hitch on rear bumper

See pic sent to me from dealer.
I tried to upload a drawing of my layout in hopes to get feedback on weight distribution but have not been successful on that. Not sure why- it seems no different that the pics which I was able to upload.... I will work on this.

That is a lot of trailer! Should be able to do anything you heart desires with that one. Looks like a high quality unit.
Good luck! I'll be watching.

That's a very nice looking trailer. Just curious as to what it weighs empty? What will you be towing it with?

I like the diamond plate down the sides - that's nice!

Will be very interested in your interior plan.

Thanks for sharing.

Here is a drawing of the layout I have in mind. I would greatly appreciate any input (especially about weight distribution). Please note- I have no plans to have water tanks. If I decide to do any- it will be a Black water tank directly under the toilet...

My TV is a 3500 GMC Duramax. I thought I had a pic on my laptop but I guess I do not... I will upload one though!
Thanks for all the replies!

Drawing is a better size but the pencil notes are very hard to read. Perhaps try writing your notations in ink? It could be my laptop screen too.

I can read large notes like "BED", but others notes are small and I can't make them out.

Hope this helps.

000
It has been some time since my last post ; and i am finally going to take some time to get in front of this laptop to make updates.
I have been working steady on the CTC and have some pics.
After working on the road for the winter, i finally got home a few weeks ago and have been fortunate to have some time off- which i have been focused on the trailer since.
i haven't posted many pics here so this may be a learning experience as we go...haha

i began with prepping the trailer for the few month's i would be gone: covered her with a tarp (which really discolored the "chrome looking" front corners. the wind was really bad this winter and the grommets on the tarp "sanded" down on the corner sections. <anyone have ideas on how to "restore" these corners...?>

then i looked online (the amzon) for tire covers...they were more than i cared to spend right now; so i went to Harbor freight and bought two tarps and some rope for covers.

when i returned; i stripped out the 3/4" flooring and lauan wall covering. (i didnt get pics of this process)
i found the overall quality of construction on this trailer to be what i had hoped for. there were a few details which were shortcuts made by the factory but overall i am pleased. one being that the spray paint did not cover under the wall lauan; even though i paid extra for weather protection. so i sprayed all the wall ribs. and sanded down areas on the frame joists where some rust was forming and sprayed those also.

i had planned on having NO tanks, however; after much debate i decided to add a black tank and a fresh water tank. i made a "mock up" of the tank first.

i am doing a two layer approach for insulation. 1/2" foamboard on the walls and 1" foamboard on the ceiling. then closed cell spray foam insulation < 1.5" on walls and ceiling and 2.5" underneath the trailer floor.> side note- they are here spray foaming today- which is why i have the time to finally post updates...haha :D
i read a lot on ways to cut to fit the foam board, there were a lot of good ideas. i had nice luck with a kitchen knife - used just to score a line using a drywall t square and then actually cutting the board with a utility knife. ( i bought a pack of 100 blades thinking the board would eat through the blades, but i did the whole job with just 2...)

i had to elevate the bathroom floor to accommodate the threaded rod (1/2") i am using to suspend the black tank, i added additional elevation to the shower to give me room for constructing the p trap underneath.

if you recall- i had originally ordered the second vent to be on the rear of the trailer with the first vent- both were to be in the "garage area", but the factory placed it at the front of the CTC. so i decided to use this as my black tank vent. i had to make some modifications
