Amount of insulation needed for build?

Postby usmc70_14 » Tue Oct 01, 2019 6:03 pm

Hello everyone...

I am finally in the stages of buying everything for my build. I've ordered a 7x12 vnose with 7' from Lark.

To insulate the walls, ceiling and ramp door. How many sheets of insulation should I get?

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge with us. :)

Your average sheet is 4x8 ft . Im sure you can figure the math from there in between the supports.

Good luck in your new cargo.

If you're asking about rigid (pink) insulation, I think you'll find the sheets are 2' x 8'.

I used 1" thick between my 1" studs, then 1/2" between the plywood strips I screwed to the metal studs (to create thermal gap), then silver tape on all seams.

Should be fairly easy to calculate linear footage around the walls, and square footage for ceiling and floor (if you're insulating that), then divide by 16. That should give you a ballpark number of sheets.

Hope this helps.

just wondering if the question is should he use 2 layers or 1 in the walls ? I use 2 layers all the way around
if you have the money I would add another layer in the ceiling ?

I'm sure I could've figured it out sooner or later using deductive reasoning. But knowing what a great source of information and inspiration this forum has been to me. This thread could've been handy for future builders. Instead I got the opposite.. Smh.. Honestly, I was expecting a simple answer... Kind of like 10, sheets for the walls, 5 for the ceiling and 2 for the ramp.

But thanks for your contribution of giving me the size of the sheet.

Don't sweat it. My first post, four teardrops ago was, "how many tubes of PL Premium glue do I need?"

It's still unanswered.

USMC - FYI ---- I just finished insulating a 7 x 12. I used 10 sheets of 1" for the walls and ceiling. I didn't do the floor. To save material, I cut the full width sheets to wall height & ceiling length, then ripped them to width. Theis saves you from having a boat load of 15 x 12 cut offs.

I wasn't trying to be a smart ass but trying to answer your question. Wasn't sure of the width between supports etc.
For most of my projects, I just dive in instead of "mathing it out" cause there's always something that comes up that wasn't anticipated.
I soon will be insulating and will probably buy 5 OR more sheets and then see what's left and going back to the store for more.

Like trying to restore a car on a 10k budget and in the end it cost 30k.

Thank you for that.. Now I have an idea and a starting point for the sheets to get..

Big thanks!
